45-70 question Tim maybe
« on: January 09, 2011, 11:24:12 AM »
Hey Ladds
I recently aquired a pretty snappy 45-70 Handi it has a case colored reciever
It looks just like the 45LC carbine "buffalo" but its 45-70 when you look at the cataloge most all the handis say SB1 or SB2 than the part number
The question are these unique recievers? not like the standard Sb1 and Sb2? which are they equal to? outside of the color of course

If bought used, with out dis assembly you will not know for certain.. WE (Only the factory has records to show.) cannot know by serial number alone.

Pull the butt off and see what the threaded end of the receiver looks like. If its solid, its a SB2 if its not its a SB1. :-[ :-[ CORRECTION: If its solid its a SB1 If not its a SB2.  ;D Yes I know the difference,  :-[ Thanks for the PM's and comment Tim!  ::)

CW

EDIT, CR receivers are SB2 with case COLOR coating. It can come off and scratches fairly easily.

IMHO not a pretty as the early SB1 and PRE SB1 shotgun receivers. I liked the purples and reds that are lacking in the current colored receivers.

CW

EDIT to correct miss speak..err type.  ;D

I know you know the difference CW, but ya typed it backwards!!  ;D Solid around the bolt hole is SB1, skeletonized is SB2, it's all listed in the FAQs for anyone wanting to know. Some of the old pre-87 cast iron frames had small voids as shown in the bottom pic, not to be confused with the much larger voids of the steel framed SB2 on the right in the upper pic.

I can tell the difference between my rifle and shotgun actions by taking the barrel off and looking at the action from above. It's not solid on the rifle.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
