Name That Gunfighter 15

Just got back from spending some time in the general vicinity of this gunfighter's most well-known area of operations.

"Moving to Alleyton, Texas, he worked as a carpenter, a wheelwright, sheep rancher, merchandiser and gunfighter. Involved in a brawl in 1877, _____?_____ wounded several people and was injured himself. Tied up and put under guard, _____?_____ freed himself, reclaimed his guns and fled. In 1878, _____?_____ and buddies killed three men in a vicious shootout over a herd of cattle. Next, _____?_____moved to northern New Mexico where he served as marshal for the town of Socorro."

Howdy,

Good to have you back.. I was getting the jitters.
You may have been near one big town, but the fella in this story shares his name with the other big Texas town, a bit north of here.

Yeehaw! Happy New Year!

Beginnin' to think Hext is actually "The Riddler", of Batman infamy, in a cowboy hat.  Always comes up with convoluted answers to my straight forward clues.  Hard to tell, but I think he knows the the answer.  Anyone else want to give it a shot before I confirm?

Howdy all,

Truly, I'm not trying to be slick or obfuscating.  I hate to be the first answer and kill the discussion.  So I try to clue in my answer, so others can keep working.

Of course, there's about 4 of us playing so far.  C'mon you lurkers!  Jump in!

Hext and Lady GB are correct.  Incidentally, I was referring to El Paso, a city I passed through twice during the past week.

Hext, I understand fully and definitely appreciate your coded answers, but if you think I'll pass up an oportunity to rag on you...  At any rate, please continue.  Maybe some lurkers will take the challenge and jump in.

I had a friend at the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) do some checking for me and he confirmend that I shouldn't have to worry about ever running into williamlayton on Texas highways.  Evidently, when ole williamlayton turned 103, the state took away his driver's license AND vehicle tags AND his vehicle inspection sticker AND his ignition keys.  Now, if we could just get some governmental agency to take away his internet license...
