I have asked this same question and got this answer. Some people like it some don't. Some of these big canine trappers just don't trust it and some see no difference in it and dye. I have not had enough experience with trapping to give you a good answer. I used it this year on all my traps. On water traps it really don't matter because they can't smell it any ways. And eventhough I have yet to actually take a canine in a foothold I have had a couple of pullouts and canines working my sets. I'll let a more experienced trapper answer your question.

Good Luck,
Zach Ellis :wink:

15,I use Blackies steel coat.It is a dip like speed dip.Do Not and I repeat--DoNot  mix dips with gasoline.The problems most people have encountered over the years,was the result of mixing the dips with gasoline.Because of all the additives in gasoline ,you do not get a complete dry out of the dips--thus your traps end up gummy,sticky and smelling of gasoline.
 USE COLEMAN FUEL to mix with your dips--it gives you a quick ,complete and odor free trap.And yes I have caught yotes in dipped traps.   Tom

I dip all my traps in "fuel" based dips.  I only trap predators and have never noticed any problems / differences over waxed traps.  Now, I know others that have had problems and only wax.  I can only speculate that differences in climate soil or what ever acount for these results.  Here in the southwest the dip seems not ot be an issue.

I use Andy Stoes speed dip on all of my traps and love it!  Like Bog said,  do not use it with gasoline,  use with Coleman fuel or mineral spirits.  I have had no problems at all with coyotes or fox on my line since using the dip.  After you do dip,  make sure you let the traps air out and they will work fine.:grin:

i'm just beginning my trappin career and speed dip has become very time preserving. i did use gasoline but a majority of my traps are in the water. Is waxing recomended on these sets. or is it personal preference.

It seems that in the water it just doesn't make no never mind any where to any one.  Land sets, particularly those meant for yotes and fox, is where the divergence of opinion comes in.  I dip all my traps with fuel based dip.  I dilute it to the max recomended dilution.  I make cetain that my traps have had a "pitting" rust before I dip.  Finall, I dip when the weather is hot and hang the traps usually for a couple of months before they go into the ground.  I don't know which part of this protocol is important its just the way I do things and it works for me.

Short answer, its a personnal thing that seems to be somewhat regional.

WQ;
   The only reason you never noticed a difference, is because possums don't give a s**t about fuel smells.  HEHEHEHEHE HAHAHAHA  :drink4:

Blackdirt,drying and air out times are dependent on weather conditions.
 When dipping in temps above 60 degrees,traps are dry to the touch in an hour or so. Everything at this time of year would depend on where you live.
 I dipped my traps for otter and beaver last season in january,I ended up going to Mississippi and my traps needed dipping.Temps were in the low 30s when I dipped.While my traps were fine for the water critters, I would have brought them inside and put a fan to them for a few days if I had used them on yotes.   Tom

You may want to cut it a bit more with coleman if you have cold temps.
 Dip your first one and see if you get the results you want,I dont think you will have problems with 220s.Have fun,wish I could dip now but it is around 20 degrees . Tom
