Rossi 92 .44-40
« on: December 23, 2003, 01:22:54 PM »
My dealer just picked up a Rossi Puma in .44-40. He said it was an older gun, but from the import marks I think it is newer than he thinks. It appears unfired and still has the origional box. I usually shoot .45 Colt in everything, but this rifle is calling to me. He want's $275 for it. Good deal, bad? I have been told that the old  .44 Wichester round does better with black powder. So, what do y'all think?

I have one in .44 Mag.  All I shoot in it is BP.  I think any .44 bore is better suited to BP than .45 Colt.  I inside neck chamfer the brass and get very little blowback.  After firing 60 rounds,  you can clean the action with a q-tip.  Go buy it.

I have had one for about 5 years and love it.  Lets face it, .44-40 is one of the three origional cartridges that the 92 was designed to use.  I shoot it at cowboy matches and have never had a jam.  Occasionally, I have even won a long range side match with it.  Sometimes I shoot black powder out of it and do not get any blow back into the chamber or action. GO GET IT!  YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY!  I love mine even though it is rather on the ugly side.

Thanks,
Houdini

Buy it! Especially if you're thinking of shooting black powder cartridge with it. The thinner necks of the bottleneck cartridges seal the chamber much better than the straightwall shells.  Buy it and don't look back.  And if you want it slicked up send it to "Nate Kiowa Jones".

Well, I went and dooed it! :-D  I ended up trading my AR-15 for it and a new Blackhawk with a scope mount. I'm gonna use the Blackhawk for hunting and I can use it as a backup for CAS. Now, off to MidwayUSA to find some dies and brass!!  :D
