how to replace broken forend lug?

Buckled up a 12 ga barrel and shot a mag duck load.The lug that holds the fore end broke off the barrel.This is an older barrel and does not have the wide flats on each side of the lug,just the round threaded stud apparently spot welded to the barrel.
Anyone have experience replacing this? I don't want this to become stub material. Thanks,G66

Send it to H&R for repair, or use low temp silver solder(see barrel fitting info on soldering shims) or epoxy to reattach it, I've done two with epoxy, one with JB Weld and one with SuperWeld,  so far, so good.

G66,

I broke the lug off a pre 1987 357 Mag nickel plated barrel.  I had the lug tig welded back on and it did not affect the accuracy of the 357.  Also, there is a GBO member that drills and taps the reinforcing plate on the new style lugs and uses epoxy and set screws to reinstall the lug.   To use this method on your old style lug you would need to fabricate and weld a small plate to the base of your lug first.

I have drilled and tapped several rifle barrels to reattach the forearm stud but I would not do this on a thin shotgun barrel.
I would do as Tim suggested and give H&R a call.

If it was made before 1987, they probably won't but it won't hurt to ask. I've thought about cutting a dovetail and making one for the rifles, but as Slufoot said, not for a shotgun barrel. One thing you could do for the shotgun barrel would be to make a saddle of sheet metal, use a short piece of ¼-20 or ¼-28 screw to attach the stud to the saddle, then silver solder or epoxy it to the barrel, even tho there wouldn't be much engagement for the threads, once it's attached to the barrel, it would hold fine. Then just relieve the forend to fit the new stud mount.

I believe that since it is a shotgun barrel, and any distortion from welding will have minimul effect on the bore, that a competent welder could to a TIG or MIG spot weld on opposite sides (Dont try to travel a bead all the way around it) and you would be fine; BUT, it has to be in the exact right place. Maybe epoxy it in place first, then take it to be welded.

I think this is going to be pushed back to winter projects but I like Tim's suggestion of using a metal saddle and silver soldering that to the barrel.I will let you know how it comes out when I get it done.   G66

If you have a big enough contact area, cleaned and prepped well, soft solder will work too. Old doubles were soft soldered.

Personally, on a shotgun barrel I wouldn't think twice of just welding it back on. (I'm a welder) If your not a welder have a reg welder do it for you.

I likely would not do the same for a rifle barrel.  ::)

I recently reattached the forearm lug on my NEF Pardner 20 gauge with JB Weld...  when I called H&R and inquired about sending it in for repair, the guy on the phone told me it would be cheaper to buy a new barrel.   :-\

I haven't shot it yet, as I am giving it plenty of time to cure, but will let you know how it turns out.
