Which barrel band?
« on: January 14, 2011, 08:46:10 PM »
I like the looks of barrel band swivel studs and noticed that some members like CWlongshot (12 ga. slug gun) and Joel (.45-70) had them on their guns.  What brand and size would I need for my .45-70 Handi?  I've checked Midway and Brownells and looked at Uncle Mike's ($17), Talley ($30) and Gentry Custom ($62) bands.  I can understand how the 2-piece Uncle Mike's band fits but how do you get the one-piece Talleys and Gentrys on?  At least they looked like solid one-piece sets in the pics.  What do you do with the existing stud on the Handi's forearm?  Remove and epoxy in the hole?

Also, does a barrel band throw off accuracy; mar the barrel?  Will it change the carrying balance of the gun for the better from the Handi's short forearm?  According to a Midway USA reviewer for the 2-piece Uncle Mike's set you need a .850-.900" band for the H&R .45-70 Buffalo barrel. Is it safe to assume it would also fit the Handi?  ???  Anyone have close up pics of their setups?

Here is a pic of the one I made for the stock I made. It adds another screw through the stock like the factory one.

Did the band effect your accuracy? How did you get to to stay in place or was it a tight fit?

Nice stock set.

Have not got to shoot it yet with the changes, waiting on the Maxi reamer before i really start testing it out. The ring I made a die to insert into a piece of heated steel tube to get the barrel taper. For the perfect fit I added a little JB weld to the inside of the ring, wrapped a piece of sandpaper on the barrel backwards and did a final sanding to the barrel for a nice tight fit. Want to thank CW for the JB idea worked out great. Then just added a second hole in the fore arm and inlaid the band into the fore arm. I will post full report on accuracy tests when reamed.

Some years back I measured the barrel dia.s at various points along both a BC 45-70 and a TM 38-55, they were the same. The U.M. 2pc I have from a gun show table fits my TM, my 12ga bird, 12ga. Buck, and my 20ga. bird barrels.
Because I havent decided just which one really gets it I have not epoxied it in place on anything, but certainly would. I have found that even if tightened down well, it can have a tendency to 'twist' a bit in use, which will mar eventually and does not give me great confidence.
Degrease the parts a couple of times and JB, let cure for several days and it should be good to go (make double sure it is straight & square on the 'stud line').

Loctite 380 should work for attaching a well fitted barrel band too, I used it to temporarily attach a Williams WGRS rear sight to my H&R M19XX shotgun, it didn't come off very easy when I tried to remove it to drill a single blind mounting hole as insurance, took several whacks with a hammer and block of wood, it's now attached with one 6-48 screw and the 380.

Nice looking rifle Brian, nice fabrication work and thanks for the input folks.  Fully stocked rifles have a special appeal don't they?  And that buttstock really looks sculpted.

Some time back I put an Uncle Mike's band on my Win. 94 .30-30 and wound up attaching it (without thinking of using JB or Locktite) to the mag tube.  The caution was to not overtighten for fear of kinking the tube.  It would slip some, not much, on firing and I wound up moving it out against the muzzle-mag tub end where it stays held in place against the band that supports that end of the gun together.  It works and has for years.  I bought a long black nylon sling and everything matches well with the black Ramline synthetic stock, Williams FP peep and front ramp sight.

Gcrank, I hadn't taken the calipers to my barrel but I didn't eyeball any taper to it.  Thanks for that bit of info.  I've been asking a lot of questions since joining this site on recoil pads, peep sights, dry firing and now barrel bands for this gun.  It's a great looking little pack gun that I will carry into the backcountry come spring.  If I can figure how to load pics I'll try to remember to post some when I get it done and/or when I go upcountry.  Thanks again for your help.
