I can't use iron sights anymore so I voted scope.  It really, to me, would depend on the caliber and the condition of the shooter's eyes.

I voted iron sights even though I can't see well enough to use them.
Since we rent our guns (they outlast us) and they may go to a younger
person, it would be good to have the option of iron sights or scope.

well for me it depends on what you are gonna do with it.  I prefer scopes on most my guns for the simple fact that we have some wide open spaces in my parts of Illinois and my eye sight is pretty crappy,   but I kinda like to go back to irons once in a while for a little more of a challenge in the woods when most shots are nice and close.  So the best option if you can afford it would be to get a gun with irons, and then have it drilled and tapped for a scope.

short, compact and ultra light,  gotta go iron sights.  This is a pack rifle. a scope would just get in the way and add weight.  Deer's chest is plenty big for iron sights

I agree with ohiobenito,  I think the rear sight should be a peep though.  Gives just a few more inches of sight radius and older eyes can pick them up better for a clearer sight picture.

I always prefer to have sights. Even if I'm going to mount a scope, I'll line the sights up and then I have a backup if something should happen to the scope.
If you don't like the sights they are easy to remove and plug the holes with filler screws.

A round like this just screams optics , either a red dot or a simple 4X would do well , but the back-up irons are a great idea .

For me, this configuration is best served with iron sights (preferably peep or receiver sights).  I had a Winchester Model 94 in a youth configuration - 16.5" barrel.  With peep sights it was handi and quick to shoot - and accurate. ;D

Iron sights to ay least backup a scope.  Scopes still break occasionally and a hunting gun needs to be useable if that happens, per Ken Walters. 

I would go with a peep as well, if it were mine and not bother with a scope.  I hate the way a rifle carries in the hand with a scope.  I'd rather reduce my working range than add a scope to almost any rifle.  A modern sight like a good Aimpoint is an option as my vision fades.  They can easily be mounted away from the rifle's balance point.

I voted iron sights, which would include a receiver sight.  For a short, light gun for packing in the woods that makes it "handier".   :P  However, a pistol scope mounted out where the rear sight is on this rifle would be very "handy" also....
