Handis and eyes

I just had cataract surgery yesterday on my "good" left eye, so it soon will be even better.  My "bad" right eye will never improve. I'm a right handed shooter, but with a Handi, the most I have to do is turn the hammer spur around and shoot left handed and practice.  I've already started to train myself to do that.  It's another great feature of the Handi....it can be shot righty or lefty.  We never know what can come up with our vision, or for that matter, the rest of our body.

Pete, when young my left eye was my lead eye and Im left handed, so I grew up shooting lefty. By my mid-20's my lead eye changed and I needed corrective lenses. I chose to change hands and eye to shoot. It only took about the summer I did it to become second nature, and I wasnt what you would call an avid shooter then, so it wasnt all that many hours or rounds.

When I had my shoulder fixed last year, I couldn't handle recoil at all on the right side.  I got pretty decent on an aimed shot left side, but never got the hang of a "snap" shot.  I, too have to get a cataract fixed on the right eye.  As soon as I save up some money, as my insurance has such a high deductible and co - pay, it's cheaper to pay for the surgery.....

You'll be knocking them dead before you know it lefty!

Get well soon Pete, you'll have no trouble shooting lefty after some practice. Being a lefty myself is one of the biggest reasons I got into Handis, they're a true ambidextrous gun.

Pete, Godspeed to you on healing up. Being a lefty like Doublebass I was attracted to handi's as well. Though I don't have the collection that you fellas have. I enjoy the 30-30 Toppers, and my switch barrel .223 lightweight and 30-06 leaves me with some good huntin' shootin' irons.

Pete hope all goes well with the healing.I'm a"righty",but shoot"lefty".Thanks to my Great Grand Dad.I'm left eyed dominant and have always shot left handed.Every thing.With a pistol i shoot strong side right but aim with my left eye.I can't hit my butt with my left hand,but shoot pretty good for a old guy left handed.Cant' shoot worth a hoot right handed with a long gun of any kind.

Thanks guys, it is doing well.  Vision today, without glasses, is almost normal for distance.  Computer distance is another thing, but my glasses work there.  I'm eager to get through this healing period, get my new glasses, and get back on my Handis.  For now, shooting is out.,,,,,,,but I can reload ;D ;D ;D

Pete,

Hope all goes well with the eye surgery and you are back on the shootin' range shortly.  I also am going to go the left handed shooting route myself.  I have shot RH all my life except for a number of hunting situations when I had to shoot left handed.   Everytime I have shot left handed it has been a one shot kill including a number of deer, squirrels, birds and last month a running possum on the other side of a good sized gully.  (Don't tell Quick I used one of his 355 BTBs to knockout a possum).  I have repeatedly tried the eye dominance test and it appears I do not have a dominant eye.  Just as well because I used to have a dominant wife and that didn't work out so well for me. ;D  Anyway, I am going to start shooting left and right handed with the long guns, same as I practice with my handguns.

Hey pete,

Sorry to hear about the right eye, but glad the left could be helped.  I shot many years R & L with rifles but primarily right handed with handguns (when I carried one on my job.)  I'm right handed but left eye dominant so have tried to stay with the left handed position with rifles the last couple of years.  You will get the hang of it in no time.  It's a matter of training through repetition.  Besides it is way more fun when you can see to hit what you're shootin' at!!   ;D

Stay warm and safe and get well soon.  BTW, it was 21 degrees here yesterday and again this morning when I woke up down here in sunny N. Texas.    :o   ???

Father, you guys are having worse weather than we have.  Right now, it is above freezeing with about 3 inches of snow on the ground.  I gotta love it.  The South and East have borne the brunt of winter so far.  My sisters in Nu Joisey have been dumped on by blizzards, and they really don't have the equipment to handle it.

I'm shooting well left handed, but I've got to think about it.  It's not reflexive or instinctive yet.  I think that will come.  I'm staying busy reloading and changeing hammer spurs from right to left.

Tom, I think Patty was, as a child, forced to be right handed.  She shoots left handed naturally, and shoots well right handed.  She shoots handguns with both hands and both eyes open.....and she can shoot the pants off of me any day of the week.

Tim, that's one critter I'm glad we don't have here.  I was plagued with possums in Florida.

I have 2 daughters one is left handed/right eye dominant the other is right handed/left eye dominant. I was too numb to check either one of them for eye dominance so they both shot guns for a while with their dominant hand, one shot poorly and the other shot surprisingly well so I never thought to check eye dominance. Once I realized I switched both of them to shooting with the other hand and it didn't take them that long to get used to shooting the opposite way.

I've got an appointment on the 26th, and I'm hopeing the Doc will give me the green light to shoot again.

Richard, we don't go snow blind so much as booze blind from cabin fever. ::) ::)  Have ya got the receipe for the Clampets possum innards and mustard greens? ???  One of the finest tasting critters I ever did was  porcupine....just superb.  They're a lot of work, but well worth the effort.  First ya gotta get the hide off, then remove all the fat kernels, then par boil it to get rid of more fat, quarter it and throw away the ribs...there's nothing there, ya could read a newspaper through them, then marinate it in your favorite marinade.  Put it on the grill and enjoy.  It is great stuff.  You can do woodchuck the same way.  I've never tried raccoon, but I understand they're done the same way.  I just have a thing about eating a garbage hound.  I'm not that crazy about bear for the same reason.  I'd rather eat the vegetarians.  Oh, yeah, beaver is good too.

Oh, I forgot, you're right, we're not on the cooking forum...sorry about that.

Pete: Isn't medical science wonderful these days? My aged parents both had cataract surgery in their late 70s, and got back high school type vision. I hope yours turns out as good or better.

Ambidextrous guns is a fine thing, but it does not solve all my problems. I am right eye dominant, shoot long guns left-hand left eye, and pistols right handed right eyed. On the couple of occasions when I have shot a long gun right handed, i had time to think, and was dead on.

I know we have a vast array of left-hand long guns to choose from today compared to a few years back, but i still wrestle with getting a bolt-gun for me and my right-hand boys. Single shot and lever are fine, I like them both. If I buy two rh bolts for my boys and lefty for me, that is only possible budget-wise with a 22lr, and is doable. So I have been thinking in centerfire, I will buy one handi, one Marlin Lever and one Savage Axis, so I can learn to use a right bolt and my boys don't have to think about it at all.
