rechamber question
« on: January 14, 2011, 04:49:35 AM »
Hi All,

I have a 308 Win Bull barrel that was rechambered (before I bought it) to 308x444M which is almost the same as a 309 JDJ.  The shoulder on the 308 x 444 is about .01 shorter than the 309 JDJ, otherwise pretty much the same dimensions.  I bought a bunch of fireformed brass with this barrel but it reaching the end of it's useful life.  I am no competent in annealing so I just shoot them until the neck shows signs of spliting.  The load are not real high pressure so I have been able to reload with only neck size and an occasional size through the FL 444M die.

Anyway hears the deal.  To size new 444M brass to 308x444 I need a 308 Win FL die and a set of 30-06 AI dies.  I have to then trim about 1/4" off the bottom of the 30-06 AI dies.  In that 444M brass is about twice the cost of 30-06 brass I am thinking instead of buying the 06AI dies and renting a 06AI reamer.  I have studied the two chamber dimensions and the AI reamer should cleanup my barrel's chamber just fine.  Also, this barrel is fitted with a muzzle brake which seems a bit of waste on fairly low recoil cartridge like the 308x444. Any thoughts or comments on things I need to consider for this rechamber?

Tom, buddy, I can't help you with that one, but I thought it might be good for you to take a sleeping pill rather than staying awake all night and coming up with this kind of stuff.  Seriously, I do the same thing....my best thinking at about 2 am.

I guess the answer to this question is "because it's there", but what makes this worth all the work and expense?  What will this cartridge do that no other factory or handload offering will do?

Just a question.

The AmmoGuide rechamber guide says it's a go, I'd go for it as long as your dimensions are based on an actual chamber cast to be sure.  ;)
