Looking for a used .357. Will the Ruger NMB stand up to a constant diet of +P loads?

That and the .44 SBH are about the most prevailant used ones out there.  I'd think any decent shop would have a couple.  I know my usual haunt has 10 or so at any given time on the used shelf.

Curious though...if the intention is to use a 'constant diet" of the heavy loads, why not simply buy a more powerful chambering to begin with?

BH73, I have a ton of +p ammo that I purchased when I owned some Dan Wesson revolvers. During a weak moment I sold the guns but not the ammo. I've been looking for a nice DW to play with again but they are scarce as hen's teeth around here and seem to cost nearly double what I can buy a Ruger for.

Am I missing something? Are you talking 38 special +Ps or have they started making +P 357s while I was asleep. The Blackhawk is chambered for 357s so 38 +Ps would be a mild load for it. +P 357s may be a different matter, but the Blackhawk is recognized as a tough gun so it would probably handle hot 357s pretty well too.

bilmac, no you didn't miss anything, I DID.

30some years ago I purchased a new Dan Wesson 357 and asked the shop owner for some shells to go with it. I was aware of the 38 spec/ 357 interchange, but when he gave me a box of 38+P I had to ask what the +P was for. He said it ment "plus pressure" and not every gun was up to shooting this hot load, but assured me my new Dan Wesson would handle them just fine. I assumed he was talking about 357's. I NOW know he was talking about some 38's, right?
Please don't tell my wife, she already thinks I'm a little slow to grasp some ideas. :o

I traded a Taurus 450 revolver for a NBH and have been very happy with it it is accurate and even the top loads in .357 (Cast) 170gr SWC do great and the recoil isn't bad. The 450 Taurus would shoot anything I put in it but past 20yds was hard to hit the broad side of the barn.

I shoot alot of the 180gr out of my bh with 13.5gr h110 and it handles really well, with a little bit of a jump of the 6 1/2" barrel. Lots of fun also.

You bet it can! I have owned a SS 4 5/8"  357Mag new model Blackhawk for a couple of
years. I have shot hundreds of full house 357Mag loads through it with no problems at all.
Check out Gunbroker.com Lots of good deals there on 357Mag Blackhawks in great shape
for decent prices. Blackhawks are really rugged. Stay away from any that have rust or
have been neglected. There are too many nice ones out there, especially in 357Mag,
to settle for for a substandard one.

Rugers are some of the strongest made (yes I know there are some stronger, but Rugers are built like a bank vault). As an example, the 44 magnum super black hawk will shoot those crazy, insanely over powered buffalo bore "+P+" loads that will literally blow a lesser revolver apart. I would say, unlike some guns where they say "Yes,you can shoot +P,just dont make a habit out of it or you will wear your gun out really fast",you should be able to shoot those +P all day long.

Go for it!
I really like mine, a .357 NBH 50th, and have no intention of abusing myself, and others, with full .357M loads. As for the gun, it would never notice so yours will be fine.
I suspect you may find you like it much better than that 'awkward' D.W.

I think you would shake loose before the gun does. ;D
