41 mag ammo
« on: December 07, 2003, 04:57:34 AM »
I am going to be purchasing a Ruger New Model Revolver in 41 mag.  I am new to hunting with a handgun but have been shooting revolvers since I was little.  My question is what factory ammunition is good for hunting whitetails as that will be the revolvers primary purpose.  Any information will be appreciated.

Winchester has come out with a new 240 grain bullet (silver tip I think?) that really should be the single best jacketed bullet load available for the .41 mag. Or just use a hard cast bullet load with 220 grain or heavier bullets.

Thanks Graybeard.  I am new to this forum and really enjoy.  I do not handload at the moment so I will need to buy factory ammunition for the time being.

Thanks Greg,  I am a State Trooper and use Cor-bons in my glock for a back up piece.  I am extremely pleased with the way they shoot in that.

As for practicing with the 41 any suggestions on ammo.

Thanks to everyone for the info.  This is a wonderful site.

My next question is wether I can mount a scope on my 41.  It is an older by in great shape.  New Model Blackhawk.  I don't mind if it has to be drilled and tapped.  I want to add a red dot scope.

Thanks for the advice.

Chad,

For deer, I think a 210gr. JHP works just fine. Check into the offerings by Federal and PMC. Both have worked very well for me when I didn't feel like pulling a handle. Good luck and welcome to the ranks of the .41Magnum. :D

Thanks Joe, I am going to pick up the revolver tomorrow.  My brother in law has it and says it is in real good shape.  I do not know much about the Ruger new model blackhawks.  Can I put a scope or a red dot on it.

I bought the 41 because I have heard alot of good talk about the caliber.  Buying it for $185.00 did not hurt either.

:D  Like the handle says I like 41 mags. If you want a great round for hunting go with ( winchester's 240 gr. platinum tip hollow point ) they are new this year. They are one of the best factory loads around. Here in Va. they cost $17.00 for a box of 20.You will like them. You can scope or dot it .Which ever you like the dot will be faster.I shoot a contender 10" barrel with a 4x swift scope. I also carry a S&W 41mag in a cross draw open sighted You can get REM. loads for practice. But for hunting go with the new Win. round or the Corbon load. You will be happy with no doubt.
          Enjoy your new toy

Thanks for the info Dennis.  Everything I have heard about the 41 so far has been positive.  I will have to check out those Winchesters.  Have u taken any game with them?  If you have I would be interested in the specifics on how they performed.  I realize dead is dead no matter what round is used, but I am always interested when something new comes out.  Keep me posted.

Thanks Chad

I like the 210 grain Hornady XTP, but you can't get them factory loaded.  Fed makes a 250 grain Castcore cartridge, and the Winchester Platinum tips look excellent.  My buddy uses the Platinum tip shotgun sabot slugs, and they are AWESOME.
I bought a S&W 657 Classic Hunter II, NIB, a few weeks before the season opened.  After a couple trips to the range, I took a nice 8 point buck late in the season.  A 30 yard neck shot dropped him where he stood.  This is my 4th handgunned deer, and my first wall hanger.  15" inside spread, and TALL tines.
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

Chad,

Before you scope it what ranges are you going to be shooting out to ?? Within 50- 75 yds.. With pratice you won't really need a scope and the added weight. I hunt mule deer and pig with mine .41 I shoot out that far with open sights.. Anything over that I'd add a scope..

just about any factory jacket ammo over 200 grain will kill a deer. As far as the scope goes id learn to shoot without it first and later if your hunting style dictates that a scope would work better buy a good 2x scope and find a mount that doesnt need you to drill and tap the gun. Once you do it you cant go back.

Chad.....nice to see another .41er as well as an LEO. I just retired after 25 years in the business.
For a scope mount for the Ruger, Weaver makes a nice unit that replaces the rear sight and clamps the front of the mount to the barrel. Brownells sells them. #955-300-011....$71.55.
For a scope try Ebay and get one of the 2 or 4 power Leupold. They can usually be had between $135-200.00.
If you can get hold of a copy of the 2004 HANDLOADER Magazine there is an excellent article in there about loading .41s as well as a review of many factory loads.
Buffalo Bore cartridges has a 170 grain Sierra load that is going 1600 fps from a 6" gun. Lung shot deer go nowhere fast.
And for more fun Marlin just this year brought out their lever action carbine in .41.....

Good hunting to you....Bob

Well does this seems like a 41 fest  or what?

I have two new 41's  (within 6 months) a S & W modle 57 and a Raging Bull.  I have been reloading and was wondering if anybody knows if the Winchester 240 grain in platnuim tip is available in just the bullet for handloaders.

Thanks,
