Where is the "Whisper"?
« on: October 29, 2010, 08:02:35 AM »
Sorry to intrude, but is this the board where I can get some info on the .300 Whisper?

I am extremely bored with hunting with my standard cartridges (45 years of it), and need to breath a little new life into my shooting hobbies.  I have zero experience with the Whisper, but an interested in the .300 Whisper, to hunt deer, at 50 to 75 yards, on a subsonic basis, out of a 22 inch rifle barrel.

My first question is, how loud is this round, in subsonic with a heavy bullets?  What would be a rough equivalent in sound?  (e.g., .38 special out of 4 inch barrel?, .45 auto, .357 Mag out of a carbine,
 etc.)

My next question is, does anybody know a source for loaded ammo in the subsonic heavy loads?

     Any other  practical advice?

Thanks, Mannyrock

Quieter than a 22 LR and you can buy ammo from Corbon.

I am very tempted.....

...........me too, except that I know myself too well.  That threaded barrel would be my gateway drug into the world of supressors and cost me LOTS more $$$ than the barrel!!!  Still, it sure would be fun to play with!!

If you are going subsonic you might as well go suppressed too.  Sure is nice for getting rid of problem critters without bothering the neighbors.  I don't have a whisper but I do shoot my .308 subsonic and suppressed.  Once you hear one for yourself you will have to have one.......

Corbon makes factory ammo in several varieties including subsonic, but it's not cheap!  Most of us who shoot Whispers load our own ammo.  I even make all my own brass.  As far as the 300 "Whisper" goes, the name "Whisper" is a trademark of SSK Industries, who is a sponsor for this forum.  There are a couple of generics that are good too - 300-221, 300 Fireball.  They're all the same.

The Whisper can be very quiet, maby a little louder than a 22LR, but you can do that with almost any cartridge.  The "Whisper" family such as the 300 Whisper take advantage of the bullet's relative length to diameter ratio to maintain accuracy at longer ranges.  For example, the 220+ grain bullets in 30 caliber are extremely long, and the barrle uses a 1/8 twist to stablize them at low speeds.

I shoot my AR-15 at normal velocities (1500 fps up to 2300fps) and use is like a little "semi-automatic 30-30".  It's an excellent deer cartridge out to around 150-200 yards.  I do this because it's hard to get most 30 caliber bullets to expand at the lower velocities.  Some folks talk about a tumbling effect that you get on impact at lower velocities with the subsonic loads, but I havn't tried it on any game, I just don't want to risk having one get away.

Also to take full advantage of the Whisper's ability to be "quiet", you'll need to pony up for a suppressor, and their not cheap!  Plus you'll have to pay the extortion fee to the BATF and the transfer fee to the Class III dealer for them to jump through all the hoops.  Total cost will be $700+ and you'll have to wait about 3 - 6 months.

Having said all of this, the 300 Whisper can be a fun little cartridge, capable of much more than it appears at first glance.

Have you considered:
.38Spl/.357 mag/max chambers [lots of "already subsonic' 38spl ammo out there].
44 Mag [same],
and 7.62x39...several handloads for subsonic heavy bullet ammo, and then you have a lot of high velocity [2,500-3,000 fps loads with light jacketed pistol bullets].

I've always thought the 7.62x39 was about like the 300 Whisper only with a lot of factory high velocity alternatives when you don't need to be so 'quiet'.

There have been posts here on GB, one guy has a NEF Single Shot suppressed and having fun with 38 SPL ammo.

Well bud, it was too tempting!   I don't know where the "other" whispers are but there's one in my stable now.  Now for dies and components. :)

THANK YOU!!!!!  I've bought three guns this month, and two barrels last month.  My wife would have killed me if I bought that barrel.

I bought a MGM 300 whisper barrel shoots great.Shot a hog with it at night and it ran off.It was a good hit too. Then I realized its just not enough power for night hunting. So I am buying a 45 70 barrel,I am a hog hunter primarily most at night. 300 whisper is really short on power for hogs. Nothing wrong with the barrel or the rifle.Chuck

I didn't think MGM could sell Whispers.  I thought only SSK could use that name.

Only SSK and Thompson Custom Shop can legally put 300 whisper on a barrel.  With any other custom barrel maker. its a 221-300 or a 300 fireball or a 300 acc or something else.  I don't know what you shot the hog with out your whisper or why you need a buffalo gun, (45/70).  I can't tell you how many hogs have been killed on our farm over the last 4 generations with a 22 short in the head.  Those hogs are domestics raised to be next season's country ham.

I shoot 220 sierra matchkings and 225 outlaw state bullets subsonic and they flat put a smack down on anything I shoot.  When in doubt, take a head shot.  Nothing and I mean nothing gimps off.

...or a 300 acc or something else.

Had to look that one up.

From:

Looks same or very close to Whisper.
