223 Which one?

Getting ready to add a 223 Handi to the safe.  Will be primarily used for plinking but would like it to be fairly accurate.  I know bull barrels are generally more accurate but don't know much about the twist rates.  Which do you recommend and why?  Bull or standard?  1:9" or 1:12" twist?

I would go for the bull in 1:9"

The faster twist rate will stabilize a wider range of bullets.  Usually anywhere in 45-69gr range.  My buddy has a 1:12" and it only likes 50gr HP.

Ive got a 1~9 standard countour extractor that shoots very well.  It seems to like 55 gr. bullets.

I have the 1-12 bull and while it's a tack driver with 55grn bullets I feel somewhat limited. I finally found a 1-9 fluted bull in the classifieds. That'll gimme the faster twist and a couple more inches, gimme a couple months and I'll let ya know.

IF you buy a new 223 or get an accessory barrel it will (should) be 1:9 twist.  You need to go back a few years to get a 1:12 twist 223.  FWIW, I had a 1:14 Twist 223, apparently someone got the 223 and 22-250 blanks mixed up, so it is always good to verify the twist rate no matter the vintage of the barrel.

I prefer the 1:9 twist, I think it is a bit more versatile.

The slower twist worked well with H322 powder and 52 grain bullets for me anyway.

I wouldn't hesitate on either one. Knowing now how to make them both shoot. Well for me anyway.
