They haven't had the technology or any complete, undamaged DNA up till possibly now from what little that I have read about it. ear

From the movie Jurassic Park. They are too busy trying to see if they can they aren't taking the time to decide if they should.

Can they, prolly but should they? Nope its time has passed there is no place in today's world for a wooly mammoth.

Theoretically....yes,  in actuality....doubtfull.  Most clones still have to have a surrogate mother to carry the fetus to term, since there is no other mammoths around this might be a bit of a challenge,  and generally if they were able to over come that most clones don't live vary long lives, and tend to have complicating health issues.  Really while I think the idea behind it is kinda neat, in actually practice I believe it is very unethical, and even me being an atheist believes that its basically a bunch of people trying to play God.

If they can, just think of all the animals I can hunt. I'd love to have the tusks of a wooly mammoth and saber tooth tiger on the wall of my man cave. A full mount T-rex would be awesome.

I doubt any of us would ever get to hunt one even if they could make one. If you want tusks just go up to the western Yukon river and dig some up out of the mud flats.

I can remember some researchers that cloned some sheep. If my memory serves right there was a point when the clones started acting a bit psycotic.

+1 BigBird, you do have a point.

I am not sure about the ethics of this but it's kind of like playing with fire. There could be alot of things go wrong. I am not sure if the world is ready for this.

I would like to see clones of the jaw fragment that is claimed to be the origins of man. I guess this would solve alot of questions. Unfortunately no viable DNA.

Anythings possible, after all, the morons in America took an illegal kenyan and made it  president.
Seriously, Like somebody else said, just because we can, should we???? If I remember correctly those cloned sheep got very violent, they did it with cows too and who knows what other animals. I would not be shocked to find that man has been cloned and nobodys talking. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Ya know what if we can we must decide why . Every human born had humans involved with it from the twinkle in the eye to conception on. If God allows us the knowlege to do these things it is our responsiblity to to them for the right reason. Could we gain knowlege to help us medicaly or such ? Its like stem cell reserch , I don't disagree with it in a controled mannor for the good it can do . If it is dome in a responsible and ethical mannor. And yes I have a dog in the fight . My doctor explained that thru. stem cell reserch that in 6-8 years it would be possible to fix the diabetes.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

This mammoth thing has been around for quite a few years. Plenty of interesting mammoth stories are out there, like the occasional finding of a mammoth in a glacier, then eating it.

I think at this point it really just rests on finding a strain of DNA that is fully complete and intact.  Cloning in general is just merely a matter of getting the process perfected.  Happens in nature all the time - identical twins are a form of natural clone.  Two distinct life forms with identical DNA sequences.

All in all, being a scientific mind, I personally have no problem with it.  Mammoth's died out recently enough that it's thought human hunting may have played a rather significant role in their extinction anyways.  Would be mighty awesome if through science modern man could reverse the damage done by our ancestors so many thousands of years ago :).

Like I said though - it really depends on whether or not we can find completely intact DNA to begin with, and perfecting the process in general.

I have mixed feelings about this. A big part of me says, NO, this is wrong, only God should create new life. BUT, my curious side says WOW, I'd love to see a live wooly mammoth. POWDERMAN.  :o :o :o :o :o :o

I'm kinda the same way as I have always been intrigued with science.  The only problem is though that you let them do it once they are gonna try to keep going farther and farther, kinda like the antis.  Keep the past where it belongs, in the past.

I'd say go for it.  With the frigid PA winters we have been having during this period of "global warming", they would be the perfect replacement for PA's sagging deer heard.  Make big game hunting exciting again..   I'd have to dust off the ol' .375

At some point it is going to happen with or without the consent of the moral minority.  Things like this are sort of the natural way of progression.  If we don't experiment, we don't learn be the results good or bad.

I'd be willing to bet, in the end someone will tell us they taste like chicken though.

I agree with MGMorden.  Since man not nature caused the wolly mammoth to go extinct, I don't have a problem with bringing them back.

Here in Alaska we are bringing back Wood Bison that man killed off over 150 years ago.  Fortunately a heard survived in Northern Canada to collect from.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' I will throw this out - often we hear how God worked a mirical thru. a doctor or some other human that cured or saved someone . If its a sin to interfear with making a life should it be one to interfear with one dieing ?  ??? And if not can't God work the mirical of life thru a human ? Most women have been doing so forever.

Theoretically....yes,  in actuality....doubtfull.  Most clones still have to have a surrogate mother to carry the fetus to term, since there is no other mammoths around this might be a bit of a challenge,

Last I heard they were looking towards elephants as surrogates (Specifically Asian Elephants who are most closely related)

Kazufumi Goto is heading a team with  a 2 prong approach -

The first part of the team is searching for X-chromosome-bearing mammoth sperm with intact DNA to inject it into an Asian elephant egg to produce a hybrid mammoth-elephant embryo. The hybrid embryo, if viable, would be implanted into an adult female Asian elephant, which would then give birth to the first-ever half-extinct creature. Only Xchromosome-bearing sperm would be used to ensure that the offspring was female. Once the female hybrid reached sexual maturity, she would be impregnated with more X-chromosome-bearing mammoth sperm and so on, until a creature genetically close to Mammuthus primigenius was procured. Each successive generation would be increasingly “woollier,” increasingly less elephant, and increasingly more “mammoth.”

second approach,

The second part of the team is seeking the cloning approach (Like Dolly the sheep).
resurrect a mammoth from intact DNA that it hopes to find preserved in the nucleus of a somatic cell from a frozen mammoth. Once the requisite genetic material is in hand, the team will fuse or inject the mammoth’s genome into an enucleated Asian elephant egg, jolt it with electricity to induce fertilization mode, and implant the resulting embryo in an Asian elephant surrogate for gestation.

Eh - it's not really "playing God".  Just an experiment and something we're learning to do.  Doctors aren't playing God when they do a heart transplant.  A farmer isn't playing God when he makes more edible crops than normally grow.  Neither is this playing God.  Just another thing that we've learned to do.

Do Clones have souls?

Not that I believe in such a concept in the first place, but do you believe that identical twins have souls?  They are completely natural clones.  Same thing.  The reality is that a clone starts the same way the rest of us do: a fertilized egg.  Because their genetic code is identical to that of another means nothing - they are still separate individuals with their own thoughts and behaviors.  The only thing that would carry over from their "parent" would be the physical appearance (and even that varies based on dress style and preferences), and any behavioral traits that were genetic vs instilled.  Bipolar disorder and the like for example.
