Made A Snow Set Today
« on: December 18, 2003, 05:16:45 AM »
I had read about this set somewhere but I can't remeber. It is snowing today and is supposed to all day and night. So I drug a big black log out into a cut cornfield that has been sewed in wheat. I then put the lure directly on the log and set a trap on both sides. Here is the catch. I didn't cover the traps at all. I am going to let the snow do that. By tonight any canine entering that field should see a big black snow covered log with good smelld coming off of it. Have any of yal ever tried anything like this set before?

Good Luck,
Zach Ellis

I just hope your log appears natural enough to suit the canines!  I prefer to plant a BIG bundle of marsh grass or weeds out in the opening where it is visible for a scent post, with one or two traps set at it and an appropriate scent post lure applied to the grass/weeds. Tracks are brushed and/or smoothed out the best one can and then a light snowfall will put the finishing touches on it.  If one just lets the snowfall try top do the sign irradicating job, there is still going to be a lot of unnatural indentations in the snow where the trap was set and of course the tracks leading up to the set.   Good luck...hope you get 'em!  If you don't, you will still learn a lot from this experience.  Snow is a great teacher as to how animals approach and work sets.  Ace :-)
