Been trying to figure out what barrel to buy, I think I'm pretty much hooked on a 16" 7x30 Waters. It will work in several ways for me. As a pistol I think I would like to set it up with a bipod, useable out in the field that way (I think, I never had a tripod on one of my contenders) and also at the range the bipod would be nice. The extra couple inches over a 14" would give me a few more FPS and maybe a little more accuracy?
My daughter has expressed an interest in going hunting with me again, and I could also use it as a little carbine for her if she actually goes with me.
Now to find the barrel and set it up, there is a gun show in Denver next weekend and I'm hoping to find something there, if not I'll post a "wanted" add here and scour the internet..Is there a difference in 16" barrels? Tapered, bull, hunter, super, ect?
Pistol wood I have but I might get something special for this gun, I just dont know yet..something that is good to use with the bipod. I already have a G2 rifle stock set gathering dust so I'm ok there I think.I may pick up a synthetic rifle stock set for the original contender also.
How bout the bipod, I have a nice harris on my 3006 Winchester but I'm wondering if there is something out there sleeker and lighter..what do you guys use.Or do you use one?
And last... the scope, my eyes are too old for steel anymore so... I have a Tasco Pro Class 4x30 on my 14" 45/70 and I love it, A TC 2x7 on my 30/30 and like it also, I picked up a 6x30 Tasco Pro Class from Ladobe (thanks Larry) a couple months ago thats just waiting for a barrel to sit on so I think I'll be doing that. My other option is moving the TC 2x7 to it, that way I could utilize my TC quick release ring set up (they wont fit the Tasco scopes 30MM diameter) and switch from pistol scope for me and rifle scope for my daughter...did that when she first started deer hunting with a 16" 223 I had.
Any thoughts on this whole endever..suggestions on a bipod and wood perhaps??
Now off to the reloading section to learn about making 7x30 brass...
