22 Hornet - What to do with it...
« on: January 16, 2011, 05:20:00 PM »
Had this 21" 22 Hornet barrel in the closet for over a year.  Finally got it out, took the scope base off and put some sights on.  I put the sight in the scope mount hole instead of mid barrel, found out why you do not do that since it would be impossible to focus on it even with reading glasses.  Shot it like that anyway and it shot very good.

Now I need to decide what to do.  This is the first 21" barrel I have had.  All my others are 23" bulls.  This is one handy little rifle.  Not sure if I should scope it or not.  Part of me says it needs a 3-9 to hit tiny targets the hornet is good for.  Part of me says that it is really a handy little rifle to carry around, but I am becoming vision challenged.

So does a scope ruin that handy feel of the 21" barrel or will it still be a handy little gun.  I do have a 2-7 laying here I could put on it since I cannot find the scope base for my guide gun.

Bullseye,

The hornet is an awesome low recoil varmint getter.  Those 35 grain vmax bullets turn it into a litter screamer at about 3000 fps.  It will make the gophers and PD's jump pretty good ;D  Works on Jacks and badgers too ;D  That 3 x 9 or 2 x 7 would be great on it.  Is this an encore, contender or handi?

Its a Contender.  Have it pieced together right now.  My two carbines have stocks and forends from gunstocks inc and I finished them myself, but the forends are all for bull barrels.  Right now I have a factory tapered forend on the gun with my self finished stock.  One is gloss and the other TC factory finished.

I always bought stocks from gunstocks inc that were sized like an Encore with a 14 1/4" LOP but were inletted for a Contender.  Problem is I have this G2 frame right now and need a stock for it and gunstocks inc is not making stocks right now.  Thinking about buying a factory G2 stock but worried about its size, which is why I had another post wanting to know what the LOP is on the G2 stock.

I'm pretty sure the LOP on a G2 is 14 1/2 inches, I'll go down and measure later to verify.

Old eyes took open sights out of my bag of tricks years ago, I hate peeps and so scoped everything.  The Hornet is a very capable cartidge for small game, varmints and some predators, but a scope makes them even better, especially when the target is small and the range long.   There are many small profile scopes that work well on Contender carbines and take nothing away from their being very handy in the field.   If you can find them the old model Burris Compact 2-7, 3-9 and 4-12 are excellent scopes for the carbine and were very well made.   Which one depends on your primary use... the 2-7 for jump shooting, the 4-12 for longer range and the 3-9 as a compromise for both.   I had a 2-7 on one of one of my 22 Hornets because I used it for jump shooting jacks, and a 4-12 on my 17 Ackley Hornet that was mainly used for long range ground diggers.   Their new compacts on the other hand are not worth the price of addmission though.   Another good choice for small Hornet carbines is the old Weaver steel K and V series scopes.   My old BRNO ZKW 465 Hornet (c. 1949) still wears one, a 3-9, its the perfect size for the rifle and does fine on the tiny GS's around here.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

My Hornet is very accurate. All I have on mine is a old Weaver K4.The crosshairs are very fine. This works for me because I rarely shoot more than 100'yards with it.It is down right deadly.

I have a 20" custom shop Hornet barrel on a G2 carbine. I use 3-9 scopes an
all my 20" barrels. They handle and shoot great. I You will love the little carbine,
especially in a Hornet!
