there is a lot of people out there that will take dogs, especially the more expensive breads, even more so when you let them run free.
When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Lettin a dog run loose and then gettin twisted off when the dog doesn't show up at home is a little bit of "self induced" anger. Since it has not come home, you actually don't know if someone picked it up, coyotes killed and ate it, or it committed suicide by car or truck, or found a female in heat. Your borrowing trouble, by speculating, unless you have been "notified".
But then again, if your dog is a chicken chaser he may have been injected with "anti chicken chaser" vaccine, and the lead based vaccine is more than he could drag home.
I have a much loved Jack Russell squirrel dog, but I keep him out of other folks' domains, and that keeps him healthy and alive. If you love'm ya keep'em up, because others may not even like'em.

I just got one in the reverse.  Patty came home from work last week and there was a dog hitchhiking in the gravel road.  The next morning he was still there and she called me on the cell and asked if I could go get him.  My neighbor said he was running bunnies across the road.  Anyhow, 141 dollars later in shots, neutering, etc.  He's sitting here next to me.  I haven't a clue as to what he is.  He's a hound, but not all beagle, ??? don't know what's in him.  Anybody got any ideas of where he comes from.

Well, petemi. We know he had a mama, and most likely a daddy. But their lineage is most likely forever lost. One thing we do know now, is that he has a NEW moma, and daddy, and he's better off for it.
The best dog I ever had was "Ole Tip". Got him in 52 or 53, and lost him in 67. Not a clue what breeding but, he was a patient, tolerant, protective, gem. Hell petemi! We're all mutts anyway. What's one more. ;)

Dee, you're right about us all being mutts, he's turning out to be the kindest, lovingest dog ever.  I've tracked him down to being either a Feist or a Cur.  He's a little gun shy, but I'm working with him with the .22 and I think we'll get him over that.  If the weather is fair tomorrow, he's going on his first hunt with me.  Gun shy is a lot like recoil.  When you're hunting, you don't even notice it.  I think he'll be fine.  Another dog, a little older beagle will be going too, and he's fine with guns.

Im looking forward to the hunt, but continue to be worried about wolves and coyotes.  The beagle, Marley, is a big strapping guy, but Charlie is just a bite or two for them.  Years back, I lost a wonderful six month old beagle to them, and it still bothers me.  Charlie tends to stick close to me, so I think that will help keep him safe.
