Need info on an older Savage 220 in 20 ga.
« on: January 08, 2011, 03:22:17 PM »
I just acquired a Savage 220 single shot in 20 gauge. Its an older gun in good condition.  I don't know much about this particular gun and would appreciate any information or tips on where to go to find out more.

On the left side of the barrel it reads: Savage Arms Corporation, Utica NY USA, Model 220

On the right side of the barrel it reads: Proof tested 20 Gauge, 2 3/4 chamber

There is no butt plate but "PA 36" is stamped into the wood.

I am looking for any information on this gun that you can provide. What kind of choke? Can I shoot slugs through it?

For all things relative to the Savage 220/219 series of guns, go to the web site savage shootersdotcom and ask for a web site moderator named "Mad Dog".  He is a Savage 220/219 collector and has done alot of historical research on where and when different models were made and what their capabilities are.  I also own a Savage 220 in 20 gauge, but it is also one of the models that were produced as a set with a centerfire barrel (in my case, a 30-30 with an extra forearm).  I haven't used slugs in my gun, but it shoots well with everything else I have put through it.  These are well made guns and were popular in their day....especially since they were made in many cases to handle centerfire cartridges as well.

Thanks Lucky! This is exactly what I was looking for. I did a quick internet search of "Savage forums" and didn't come up with anything.  Thanks for taking the time to point me in the right direction.

I love this gun! I was originally looking at a new H&R Pardner but this Savage 220 "found" me.  It locks up tight and I really like the tang safety.
