« on: December 27, 2010, 03:52:05 PM »
We've hunted Morels for years up here in michigan. Used to get the by the bag full on our land by the apple trees.

We've had some monsters in our time.

Let's see some of your morels!!!

The spring of 2010 is when got started in mushroom hunting. A few guys from hunting camp gave me some pointers on where to look. I found 23 morels on my first hunt, all near dead, or dying elm trees. I looked near a few old apple orchards, but found nothing. The largest morel I found was I think 8"tall. The guys from camp said it was beginners luck. I guess we will have to wait till this spring to find out.  :D

There must be something with the number 23. It just so happens I found a 23 pound sheepshead this past fall on my first ever sheepshead hunt. ;D

I'll get some pictures posted soon.

Can't say I ever took a picture of one.  After all I wasn't pickin um cause they were photogenic.   :D  The red ones and the black ones are OK, but the big white ones that come along late in the season are what it's all about.  I've found them 8" tall or taller and a few big around as your fist, but the smaller ones are better eatin.  Here in southern Indiana we find them under elm and ash.  If there are beech trees around, I don't even bother to look.  Used to find them on 3800 acres of abandoned veneer timber property.  In the last few years that ground has given way to the McMansions I detest so much.  Now I go from one smaller patch of woods to the next to fill my quota.

Probably late but we usually soak morels in cold salted water for a while.  Take out and rinse and drain.  Smaller ones cut in half, larger quarter.  Mix and beat together eggs and milk.  Dip mushroom pieces.  Roll or dredge in cracker crumbs or Panko. Salt & pepper pieces.  Fry medium heat in butter or olive oil.  Enjoy.

We enjoy  :)the smaller ones.
Happy Trails!
