12 or 20 guage?
« on: January 24, 2011, 12:15:47 PM »
I want to have an extra barrel to go on a short Handi that I want to build. Thinking 357 or 45-70, 16-18' barrel. Would like to have a shorty shotgun barrel to travel with it. Question is 12 or 20? I know the 20ga. would easier on my shoulder.
I want to be able to use slugs , buck, and shot out to the end of my eyes, about 50 yards. What advice can you guys give me?
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Robert

20 should do the trick and you can get a 22" factory barrel if you don't feel like chopping one
The tamer 20 comes with a 20" mod choked barrel that is about perfect as a do all walking around gun
.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

I have a 20 I cut down to 18 1/2. It shoots slugs to about 1.5" at 50. Could be better, but I only shot some extra slugs I had. I did not try multiple kinds. I did have a friend drill and tap for scope. Have not tried buckshot.
I also have a 12 cut down to 18 1/2" never shot slugs thru it. Have shot a bunch of bird shot thru it. Have killed a load of quail and a few squirrel and a couple bunnies. Kills clays great if you use a hand thrower. ;)

I have one of the 22" 20ga and love it. It's light swings great and kills everything from squirell to bunnies to turkey to deer.

If I didn't have my 16 then I'd have a 20. I don't feel the need to beat up my shoulder with a 12 when I can do the same things with a 20.

The 12 on that under 5.5# platform is a visious kicking beast (I have one).
Go with a .357 for .38s on up (maybe ream it to max if you need more than mags) and a 20 and you will be happy.

Thanks, guys. I was hopeing that ya'll would say "20ga."! I wasn't looking forward to lighting off a big 12ga from my old shoulder! Almost as good a choice on different ammo on the 20's as the 12's
Looking forward to putting together this little travelin' bag! And yes , I want to put the reamer to the .357 mag barrel, make it a MAX! Should make a fine combo!
Thanks to all.
