savage 24J-DL
« on: March 07, 2011, 12:42:43 PM »
ive been looking at this gun at the local gun store, its the 22 over 20ga,has the nickle reciever with a fox on one side an a turky on the other.its in great condition.it also has a williams peep sight on it.no rust, clean bores, wood looks real good.but you can tell its been used but not abused.hes asking $425 for it but when i went up an had him get me a left hand savage 93 17hmr he told me to make him an offer.so im thinking i should buy this thing .think it would be the cats meow for small game.whats the going rate for these guns.
thanks
Kawie

give him a low  offer and leave the door open for negations, I would start with about 1/2 his asking price. If he is saying give him a price he may be trying to move it because it has been sitting for a while and willing to let it go for about what he paid for it.

That is a nicer model and those 24s are not cheap anymore around here. And with a PEEP! I would have to bite at anything back of four bills.

i got to go this thursday or friday an pick up my 17hmr an im going to see if he will take $350 for it.i know hes had it for about 6-8 mounths an even had it on layaway an the person drop out on that so he might let me have it for $350.i dont want to insult him with a realy low ball price.hes a great guy that does this in his spare time, hes always taken care of me.i would rather put the money in his pocket than some chain store that couldnt care less who i am
thanks

I have been lucky enough to have found 2 of these fine combo guns, you are 100% correct, they are excellent small game guns.  As cheffjeff pointed out these are the "upgrade" version, the peep is a sweet touch also and rarely seen in these parts. GOOD LUCK on your offer sir.

the 22 mag is a better option but i think you get more versatility from a center fire gun like a 222 or 223 over 20 ga.i have one and have sold off my rimfires over 20 or 410 because i wasn't using them much.i like to use the mca adapters for 222 to 22mag and the cabelas 20 to 410 chambermates.i know --some people don't think the mca's are any good but i find they work fine for me and (in Fla) i need to have a centerfire to legally hunt deer.
just a thought

flaflash  i have other guns that would be better for deer hunting than a savage24 (marlin 336 30-30 an 35rem,50cal muzzle loaders,357 handi talo 2 20 gapump guns,44 mag 1892 ect..). i have 3 22lr rifle but they are semi auto an not legal to hunt in pa with.i have no 22mag so this will fill that gap, while being a great small game getter an i do believe that i can use it for sping turkey too but have to check my state regs first.i would also like to find a 22 hornet over 410 to go along with this one.for the most part i have about 20 guns now an im buying guns that i always wanted but couldnt buy them cause of lack of funds now i can since my fun fund has increased. ;D

kawie --i don't think 22hornet 410 was available from savage--i've seen it from springfield arms as their survival rifle -it folds up
24's work really well in fla for deer cause we buggy hunt but my 12/223 is excellant for turkey (3" w/screw in chokes) i like having the 223 in case i see a coyote or bobcat
the 20 ga's don't make me feel comfortable with the longer shots the toms sometimes require
