Cast 7X57 for hunting?
« on: February 11, 2011, 11:58:53 AM »
Hello, I have a pre war (WW1) German sporting rifle.  Near mint bore, but oversize in grooves..which was normal I think for German rifles. (.288")  I had Fred Leeth make up a couple of nose-pour moulds.  One is a copy of Lyman 31108..this has a nice flat nose & weighs 150gr.  The other is a copy of the old Ideal 1903 heavy .30.  this one came out a bit heavy at 180gr.  Also nice wide meplat.  I haven't tried the heaver one yet, but the 150's are grouping in 11/4" at 100yd. using H4895.  This rifle likes heavy loads!  Rifle came from Alaska, and beautifuly proffesional job of glass bedding has been done..so I am prettty sure it's hunted before...but I wonder about the reliability of cast..would love to take a wild Boar   The action is engraved & case-colored, heavely engraved animal scene on floorplate. Double-set triggers, horn triggerguard, and buttplate.   4X Zeis in German claw-mounts on full-length matted rib.  Thanks for any information you could give me.

Wal now, I don't know!  You had somebody else make your molds.  They may not make killing bullets like mine do!

If that is enough bull, definately go for game with them.  Keep hardness at around 14 bhn for best expansion and weight retention, and do it with ww lead, sweetened with about 1% tin, and air cooled on a pad with a fan blowing across them.  Ambient temperature should be 70 deg F or less.  That will bump the normal 12 bhn hardness up to around 14.  If your start speed is not over 2400 fps, and you MUST have LBT lube to get that speed, they will perform like good standard jacketed hunting bullets on game.
