aerotip performance
« on: February 05, 2011, 04:49:17 AM »
last year I shot a white tail at 75 yards ~125# using a 295 aerotip pushed with 2 X 50  triple seven pellets from my 50 cal.
The  frontal shot entered just to the center of the of the front shoulder and  continued through the entire length of the animal coming to rest in the opposite rear ham against the bone. Half of the bullet was gone but the other half had made it through the entire length of the animal and was still retained its shape. The deer dropped in its tracks.
I tend to use heavier bullets with moderate loads as my shots are under 100 yards
Maybe some of the "blown up bullets" could be from pushing lighter bullets very fast. Did these bullets drop the deer--the final answer

I shot a doe  with a 50 cal optima, 245gr Powerbelt over 100gr Triple 7 loose powder. I hit her in the shoulder at 50-60 yds quartering towards me.  it fragmented, but still ended up in the lungs, no exit.  She rolled backwards and dropped dead.  Did the bullet fragment??  Yes, but still got the job done, very effectively.  I believe as long as you got enough gun, a fast expanding bullet is good thing to transfer energy.  Now if I was pistol hunting, I would opt for a penetrating bullet, but in an in-line muzzleloader, fast expanding is just fine.

Shot a 125 lb doe with a 245 gr Aerotip using 85 gr of BH209. Hit her in the neck at 55 paces. The bullet went through, leaving a BIG exit hole. My CVA Wolf keeps about a 2" group at 75 yards using this load.
