Having trained and worked police k-9s for a living, and using them not only to find, and arrest bad guys, but also training "drug dogs", I assure you, that unless you can seal yourself in a vacuum you will not fool the dog most of the time.
If I were personally trying to elude capture and a k-9 were being used, I would simply eliminate the dog. But then again, being a trainer-handler myself, I know that would cause the handler-partner of said dog eliminated to "come forth" with much vigor in righting the wrong.

And in Va. if he ( handler) didn't end it the court would hear a case for murder of a policeman or trooper as the case may be.

  Until recently, my #2 grandson worked for one of the big package delivery services..not the brown one..  Every so often the DEA would bring their dogs to the warehouse.  Dogs check the boxes.. when one is located by the dogs, the handlers are confident enough of the dog's ability that they do not open the package carefully; they just slice it right down through the middle, like sawing a log.  They find the dope, usually right in the center..wrapped in tinfoil, wrapped in plastic and bags of all kinds of plastic etc.  Those plastic bags are usually filled with some kind of air freshner, toilet bowl cleaner, cologne etc.  It didn't make any difference... the addressee still got a visit and most often, some shiny new bracelets !

When I came back from Canada once we had dogs in the truck . At the border they have dogs to check vehicles. The dog checking mine came up circled the truck then sat down. The other times I had been checked the dog and handler went on. I guess i looked concerned so the guy in the booth said relax hes letting us know you have dogs on board .

  That is indeed interesting; I guess dogs each have their own way of showing their decision, perhaps Dee can elaborate.  I was doing a demonstration at a festival a couple years back.  The county sheriff's dept had their dogs there for a demo, and since my Ranger was parked nearby, she (the officer) asked if she could use my truck..jokingly saying.."better not have anything in there, or it will mess up my dog..and your day"..
   I told her not to worry..go ahead.  She placed a small bag of something atop the right rear wheel..which was a "piece of cake" for the dog.
   I have been told this same dept used to have a really great dog, but they had to use her outdoors only.  Her reaction to a "hit" was quite often, to immediately 'take a dump'..

Passive and aggressive alerts are part of the training. Some prefer the passive alert (i.e. sitting) I personally preferred the aggressive alert, as this with caution pinpoints the exact location of the item searched for.
