Hardcore squirrel hunters: Show off your rifles!
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:38:14 AM »
When I was a younger lad, I loved squirrel hunting, especially with a good scoped .22.  Now that I'm in my late 40s I am once again revisiting the fun of the 'squirrel woods'.  I lucked across a nice little Remington 580 single shot bolt gun that I plan on turning in to a tack-driving squirrel gun.  It will be refinished and fitted with a yet to be determined highpowered optic.  Half the fun will be in striving to find the best ammo for it....one that produces tiny 50-yard groups.   ;D

ANyway...for you diehard tree rat shooters, now is the time for you to show off your rigs!

Usually one of these.

1984 Ruger 77/22, 2006 Ruger 10/22 WWS, 1977 Ruger 10/22 DL, 1997 Ruger 10/22 DSP, 1995 Ruger 10/22 DSP, 1995 Ruger 10/22 Laminate stock, Remington 597, Stevens 46, 1982 Marlin 39A

But lately I've started liking this one so much I fine myself with it more and more.

Ithaca M-49 Single Shot 22.

I've been using this one since 1977, with 25grs of Goex FFF and a .390 patched ball, she's good out to 50 yards with head shots...

I'm getting to this thread late, but here is my fuzzy-tail terminator:  H&R Sportster .17HMR.

My Remington 597 is also a great squirrel gun, but since I bought the hummer, I don't get it out as much anymore during hunting season.

I like my Kimber .22 Hunter - Great trigger, and very accurate.  I use Eley target ammo for head shots, CCI Velociters for anything else.  I have a bunch of .22 rifles, but this is the one I grab when I am serious about squirrel hunting.

Sorry for the poor quality pics. This is my Winchester Wildcat (Russian TOZ-78) target-varmint with a Millett 4-16 scope and my Sig 522. The Wildcat is my main small critter rifle and the Sig is my walking along and jump shooting jack rabbit rifle but it will also work just fine on squirrels.

That .40 caliber flintlock was bought in 1977 when I lived in Atlanta...I was in Stone Mountain, Georgia and saw a gunshop...I walked in and met Bob Watts, he is one of the gunsmiths interviewed for Foxfire 5...I always wanted a long rifle and never cared for the mass produced ones...I grew up near Williamsburg, VA and used to visit there and watch Wallace Gusler build...

At any rate, I bought the gun...She has a  large Siler lock on her, when I bought her she had a .45 caliber Douglas barrel that was 42 inches long and 13/16th thick...In 1988 I built a .54 caliber flintlock and got Ed Rayle to make and fit a .40 caliber barrel to her...

In 1979, I killed my first ever wild turkey with this gun, using 50grs FFF Goex and called him in with a wing bone call that I had made...My squirrel load is only 25grs FFF...I've also killed squirrels with the .54 and 50grs FFF...

My FFL holder requires any firearms to be shipped to them via another FFL holder.  So, If I make an offer on a firearm please let me know if this is capable of being done from the start.  Please do NOT mark an item "SPF" to me until we "both" are happy with and in agreement on shipping, funds and the transaction in general.   Thanks

These are not rimfires but still work well for squirrels. The single trigger gun is a Thompson-Center TCR-87 with a barrel in .22 Cooper Centerfire Magnum which is basically a strait cased centerfire with a little more punch then a .22 Magnum (40-gr Sierra semi-pointed bullets at 2250 fps). The double trigger gun is a Thompson-Center TCR-83 with a .17 Hornet barrel. My load for aerial targets is a 15-gr Berger hollow-point bullet at 3950 fps (head shots only).

My Marlin 60. Bought used, chopped the stock for the kids to learn on. I wanted a new one recently. Soo I added 4" and a comb to the stock. Cut and crowned the barrel. Cut the mag tube to match. Trigger job to remove the slop. It use to shoot good. Hoping now that it fits that it will shoot better. Walmart camo using stencils and potato sack  ;)

That’s a tall order as I started shooting squirrels in the early 50’s, did so until the health failed a few years ago… I did it for about 55 years hunting ground squirrels, and about 40 tree rats.   I have owned a lot of firearms for it, way too many to even remember let alone show pictures of.   Quite a few of the models I had more than one of, some several of over the years as well.

But, I give it a go, break them up into a few posts…

Part 1 Traditional Black Powder.
Easily the most fun, but I didn’t start shooing black until 1970.    All my last hunts were with only them though, so their memory lives on.    Favorite was the TC Hawken 36 (still have it).

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Part 2A Handguns.
As a serious handgun hunter from the early-mid 60’s they got the call as well.   Favorites were my grandfathers HS HD Military I first shot in the mid 50’s and was given to me by the late 50’s (still have it); the Ruger OM single six (still have); the Colt NF Buntline and the Bullberry Match.

Part 3A Rifles.
Lots of favorites, at least at the time I had them.   The JC Higgins 31 that was my first semi auto rifle in 1959 (still have); the Stevens Favorites; Winchester 1890’s, 1903, 1906’s; Mossberg Chuckster; Marlin 17VS (still have); the Ruger 77/22 switch barrel (still have) and the Crow Magnum I also still have.
