Minks and Chickens don't Mix - Missin my 'ol Girl again tonight
« on: February 28, 2011, 04:41:07 PM »
Last winter it was an Ermine that took my wifes prized Silkies.  Took me and my dog Tessa 2 nights of no sleep but She finally cornered it and when I called her to back well lets just say problem eliminated.

After that I took to carrying my 357 loaded with 38 SP every night when I put the chickens up to roost. After a year of no problems I just recently got lax and out of the habit and sure enough was headed down to the coop about an hour ago to make sure heat lamps were on as temps are dropping and double check everything was buttoned up and sure enough right there at the coop door was a Mink , good sized -  full 2 feel long.  Well he skedaddled the heck outta there and probably heard me cursing as he hit the woods across the driveway.

I had to put Tessa down just before winter heavy snows, her age caught up with her (still breaks my heart) and though she kept trying I could tell sh was telling us it was hurting her to keep trying to do her Jobs,  So we make the call (one of the hardest calls to vet I have had to make in a long time).

now I don't have my buddy to guard the Goat heard and make rounds past the coop periodically throughout the night anymore , So it looks like it's back to carrying when I head towards the coop again and some more sleepless nights on my own for a bit until I  can catch 'em in the act.

I sure do miss my 'ol girl again this evening. She was a great companion who loved her Job of protecting all that she considered hers family and farm critters alike. I don't think a day goes by when I still don't think of her. And tonight she sure would have enjoyed the challenge of eliminating that mink.

scootrd,
Sorry to hear of your loss of a good pup! I too have had to make those calls or that final trip to the vet! Not fun.
Those mink can really be a major PITA! Don`t wait to long to get another good pup to take on the chores around the place.
What type of goats do you have??

Now I know I just posted here.
I'll try again.
I feel for you losing that little friend.  I had to put down my old buddy, Gabe.  He was my sheep dog, a Great Pyrenees.  I'm kinda thinking towards a little Jack Russel Terrior to help me with my chicken dilemma.  They're pretty fierce varment fighters, and make a great buddy.  I don't know if one could handle a 2 foot Mink though. ???
Enjoy your rights to keep and bear arms.

Fopr two foot mink,Airedale!!

Had a Airedale when I was young , Great dogs!!!!! Came home one day to find our Airedale laying in the garage very quiet and calm ...But he had a salesman pinned wiith his back to the wall and the open garage door He was very proud of what he was able to accomplish . The salesman had been trapped for about 45 minutes. Every time he tried to scoot out our Airedale would growl but never charged.

As a Kid I thought it was the funniest thing in the world. My dad told him next time maybe he shouldn't enter someone's garage when they are not home. Never saw the salesman in the neighborhood again either.

Great dogs ... and powerful ..don't see alot of them around anymore.

My neighbor has an Airedale that breaks out of his underground electric fence a few times a year. The first place he goes is to my bobwhites, trying to eat the cage up literally. I have to drag him back usually whipping him because he tries to bite. Once he is in the back of the truck for the ride back he is happy as a lark. Between me and the neighbor there is about a mile. He took the dog quail hunting a few times and first chance he gets he is hunting them on his own. I guess mine are just easier to hunt since they don't fly away and the wind usually blows from my place to his. :)

For your mink you may want to trap him near the creek. Or where you saw him run to the woods. I use salmon patties but imagine about anything would work with them. http://www.bugspray.com/article/mink.html
