243 trouble
« on: January 26, 2011, 02:41:48 PM »
I have a 243 ultra varmit with a 24" fluted barrell that is a tack driver and my wife has a 243 from walmart that won't group at all.  My serial number starts with an HX hers starts with a CBA what is the difference between the frames of the two guns?  I've been reading GBO for days upon days to try and figure her gun I was going to bed the stock but decided to shoot it without the fore end first and it actually shot worse I mean I had flyers that were 8" off at 100 yrds.  I've loaded many different rounds and have not even come close to getting any groups out of it.  So any suggestions would be nice because this is very frustrating and I am getting tired of messing with the gun

Welcome! Read the Handi Basics 101, cover all those bases first if you haven't. HX was made in 2007, CBA was made May 2008 or later. your wife's rifle may need to go back to H&R for repair, follow the directions on the repair web page to get that done.

I figure her's needs to go back.  I've read the FAQ's and have tried most of it over the last year we've had it.  Today was the first day I tried it without the fore end and was very dissapointed.  I also tried the stress relief test today and there is no ping, ring or anything when you tap the lone barrell.  What do I tell them when I send it back?  Just that it doesn't group or what?  Also did I read that they will lighten up the trigger if I ask?

Just tell them you've tried lots of different ammo and it hasn't worked, it should put 3 factory rounds inside 2" at 100yds, or better. Yes, include a note to reduce trigger pull to ~3½lbs, put a tag on the trigger guard also so the gunsmith knows what all is wrong with it including the trigger adjustment, when you call, ask them to send a return shipping label to cover cost.

thanks a bunch i appreciate it I just wish I would have found this site years ago but I never had to look because my gun shoots like a dream I have had my handi for a few years and it is by far my favorite.  My wife's on the other hand my least favorite.  It's gonna take me a decade to catch up on all that I've missed by not being a member. Thanks again.  Oh by the way did I mention "THIS IS THE BEST SITE EVER!!!!"

Can you ship the whole gun or do you need to ship the receiver and barrel in two packages?
