.280 barrell contour
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:46:55 PM »
I'm sending a handi with a .243 bull barrel on it back to get so QC work done on it and was going to have them add a .280 barrel to it and was wondering if the contours of the barrels are similar or not.

The 280 will be a lighter contoured barrel than your 243 bull. 26-t

that's what I thought but was not sure where it was 4 inches longer but will get it anyways because I love the 7mm caliber just not sure if I should go with the 280 or the 7mm-08. Any opinions on which the handi's preffers?

I preffer the 280 also because where we hunt out west here the shots are sometimes up to 400 yrds i just wasn't sure if the 280 is a good caliber for the handi or not but I had heard the 7mm-08 was so I think unless someone can give me a reason why not too it a 280 for me.

Just regarding barrel 'fit'; the forestock will fit either profile, the channel is 'generous', but I much prefer having dedicated forestocks for each barrel. They are cheap enough, maybe have them fit one up to match your buttstock when they do the .280.

will do for sure I preffer a fore end for each barrel because I like them bedded I was just curious about the contour because I like the look and the weight of the heavier barrels.  but I appreciate all the advice..

just checked my 22" 223 bull barrel. at tip of forend, bull was just a few thou. SMALLER than my 280 barrel at same point!! 280 may not be "bull" contour, but i can't think of anyone who would call it a "normal" sporting contour. closer to what i would see as comparable to other brands'  "varmint weight" barrels. yup, i'm a 280 fan, got two of them. definite step-up from a 7-08 IMO. enjoy. regards, jather........

Bought a 280 to get the stocks and receiver.  It took less than 20 rounds to convince me I still needed a stock and receiver.  This one ain't goin' nowhere.

Have a .280 and love it.  Everything I have shot with it has not taking a step.
Wife shoots a 7-08 and it is a good cal. but nothing like the 280.

Both outstanding cartridges, but the 280 has been a real "go to" round for me.  That said, ya can't go wrong with either one.  I have 4 of the 7mm08's and 3 of the 280's, thinking of getting a 280 barrel for another one of my bolts to even up the score. ;D  DP

Well I'm glad to see so many 280 fans in my opinion the 280 is a very under rated caliber and you just don't hear about too many people that use it.  I don't understand it I think it is my favorite caliber for big game because of it's speed, trajectory and managable recoil.  I'm excited to get the 280 barrrel and maybe if this one is a producer I'll step up and try an ackley.  I've never been around a 280 AI so I don't know too much about them but everything is worth a try especially if I can convince the little lady that I need an action to go with it. I also have a savage in 30-06 that is gettin converted to a 280 this spring I just feel it is a superior cartridge and can't see going wrong with it
