45 Long Colt AKA "Pop Gun " is a Bad gun!
« on: February 01, 2011, 01:57:57 AM »
Last weekend of hunting season , our primitive ? weapon season. Final score among the 4 hunters 50 cal muzzle loader 0 for 1,  45-70 one deer in 3 shots & popgun one for one. This was the smallest deer I've taken with this gun & ran the farthest almost 70 yards. I'm sitting on a turkey stool in brush & the short gun works so much better! They give me grief about my gun & even nicknamed it "popgun" but in the 3 years it's 3 for 3 all with easy recoveries!

Looks like it did a good job at "popping" that buck. ;D
Congrats... he's a dandy.

What load are you using in the 45?

That is a sweet little rifle...I love mine.  I haven't tried it on deer yet, but thanks for telling me it'll do the job.  Congrats, nice buck.

45-70 one deer in 3 shots

Congrats on the nice buck!  I hope the three shots from the 45-70 didn't all hit the same deer. :o

My deer season is over, so I'm going to have to see what mine does on hogs first, but that double lung shot you made will do the trick every time!

Nice buck!

45LC is serious power.  My revolver and its 300 grn. hardcast never fails to cleanly kill.  In a rifle, it would be even more capable.

I tried some 270 grain Keith style bullets over 15.7 grains of 2400 this weekend, the little gun likes that!

My popgun likes both the  260 grain & 320 grain Keiths over 20 grains of 2400.  A lot.  Me too!

I'm shooting 300 grain Hornady XTP's and with nice results.

The little 45 has a distinct sound sound to it, and probably why the name "pop gun" but I like it.

Sounds muffled and not ear splitting like most of my other calibers even with hot loads.

Well, since the other guns are proven rounds... sounds like you need to take those guys to the range and teach them to shoot!

Good on ya'...

Great shootin' with a great caliber.
