Resizing lube & Inside neck tention ?
« on: February 06, 2011, 06:08:35 PM »
I'm currently useing the RCBS case lube and pad. When cases are resized, I roll'em on the pad obviously and use a brush to get some inside the neck.
(I still use the FL for body size and shoulder bump) Then I wash my cases and dry'm either in the oven for a short while at low temp or overnight.

Seems alot of folks think this is olde school and takes too much time (not me) and have changed to Imperial wax for sizeing. Those folks say they just dip a finger, wipe it on, size, an wipe it off,,done.
If useing Imperial;
How do you lube the inside neck? And if you do use Imperial for that, How do you get it out so it doesn't affect teck tention?

I have used the white mica before for inside the neck and it worked fine except for the mess.
It never seemed to affect neck tension at all.
Never was enough left after resizing I guess.
Now I use Hornady One Shot in the spray can.
Just a very quick, lite pass at an angle from both sides while in the tray and you are ready to go.
Same results without all the powder mess.
Never noticed any problems with neck tension with this product either.
After resizing I just wipe the casings with a clean T shirt.

SAME HERE!!!  ;D

The mica is very efficient. I have a little stand with a couple caliber nylon brushes standing up to apply it. Works very nicely. Never too much and never a worry of fouling powder or a primer.

The Hornady/Lyman spray can case lube works well too. I prefer Dillon case lube.

Imperial is a great product and I have used it allot in the past.

I have used everything over the years Imperial is the best I pick up a little wax using the case mouth about every 5 case after sizing I wipe them with a rag outside only and toss in tumbler I don't worry about cleaning cases mouths the imperial has no effect on anything.

I also do the inside of about every fifth case, I use a pipe cleaner that is folded over so it fits snugly in the case with a little ISW on it.  After resizing   I throw them in the tumbler to clean the outside. Then I wipe out the necks with a  old bore brush that has a cleaning patch on the end. I spray a little brake cleaner on the patch.

If at all possible I neck size using a Redding neck sizing die with a carbide die button.  With these I dip the neck in mica.

If doing something other than neck sizing I like the Imperial wax.

I have done some comparisons between various types of case cleaning and resulting accuracy and differences do result.

I have used or use to use:

1.  RCBS case lube.  It works well but is quite messy so I quite using it years ago.

2.  Hornady One Shot works if used freshly applied but if you let it dry you're risking a case stuck in a die.  When using it, I hold the cases in my hand, apply the One Shot and size the cases.  When I run my current can dry, I'll probably not buy more.

3.  If just neck sizing, I'll sometimes use graphite which works well.

4.  Overall, I'm most satisfied with Imperial Sizing Wax.  I put a little on the outside of the case and every 2 or 3 cases put a little on the inside of the neck.  Also, when using Redding dies, I use the carbide sizer buttons.

I've used various methods of getting the lube off the inside and outside of the cases after sizing.  I've just tumbled in walnut shell media which works OK but eventually the media gets old and you have to poke media out of primer flash holes one by one.  I've also tried gasoline which works well but the cases have a gasoline smell for WEEKS.  I've tried gasoline followed by a wash in detergent which results in less gasoline small and I've tried just detergent which is time intensive but OK.

Now, are you all listening?  For the best way to get your cases shiny and clean (including the insides and primer pockets) and to remove all lube, put into a 15 lb. capacity Thumler's Tumbler:

1.  5 to 7 lbs. of stainless steel pins.

2.  Two tablespoons of Dawn dishwasher detergent.

3.  Half a teaspoon of Lemishine.

4.  Fill tumbler half full with brass and cover with water.

5.  Tumble for 2 hours, rinse until fairly clear, add a tablespoon of Dawn and tumble again for 2 hours.  The reason for the water change is the Lemishine which will discolor cases if not all removed.  You can also omit the Lemishine which still results in very shiny cases but the insides and primer pockets aren't quite as clean.

For cases I resize with no lube in carbide dies, I'll probably still use my vibratory tumbler with the walnut shell media since its capacity is much greater than the Thumler's Tumbler; that is until the desire for case bling becomes irresistible.

Well so far, I'm stickin with the RCBS stuff. At least I can was that stuff out with just a drop of dish soap in a pan, slosh, rinse and dry.
I'm all for tryin new stuff and I guess I can spring a few bucks for a tin of Imperial, but why fix what ain't broke? After all I'm loading for hunting guns and enjoy some extra shooting to keep myself sharp but at 1200 rounds a year taking a little extra time for washing brass ain't a big deal

I use one you all have not mentioned.  Hornady Unique lube, which is (I think) just lanolin.  Smells good, not oily, does not gum up my dies as Imperial has.  I have used a concoction of Lee lube, water and alcohol to make a spray lube.  I just don't like the water soluble stuff like Lee, as I have found it will rust your dies.  Don't know about the One Shot, have not used it.

The Unique is really nice and easy, a little swipe between the thumb and forefinger and lube about 10 cases, a little goes a long way.  Then just rub it in, helps dry cracked hands. ;)

I'm with Revbc,  I use Hornady Unique.  Have used the same tub for many many years. Good for leather too. Wipes off pretty easy with paper towel.  Sometimes I let a little dab into the case neck. But mostly I use a Bonanza graphiter (plastic plastic bore bristles screw into a small reservoir of graphite) and Imperial ultrafine graphite for insidie and outside neck lube. I like it better than Imperial wax unless the cases need heavy sizing. I have tried the mica but like the graphite better; while its a little messier, I think it is smoother.

go to your pharmacy and ask for anhydrous lanolin. For the price of a tin of imperail you can get a tub of lanolin and its the same thing. Make sure though that the lanolin is anhydrous (no water) A 20 dollar tub of it will last even a guy that loads a ton of ammo near a lifetime.
