Two Caliber Double Rifle ???
« on: February 13, 2011, 06:18:29 AM »
Question - Why not make an over/under double rifle with the barrels in different calibers? For example one barrel could be in a long range caliber like 7MM STW and the other be in a stopping caliber like .458 Lott. One would probably sight it in perfectly for the long range caliber and as long as the short range stopping caliber were close at short range that would be good enough. Also, with some of the new vairiable power scopes having a 5:1 power range, a scope like a 2-10X variable would be almost ideal for both calibers. Would not this combination be good for a hunt for caribou or wolf in Alaska where one might run into a bear?

well, if yer hunting and your quarry is in sight and the adrenaline is up i could see problems....two different barrels using two different catrtridges could very well get confusing when you need a quick reload.....

zoner - I supose that could be a problem. I hunted with a Stevens .22/.410 over/under frequently when 12 - 14 years old. At first I got too excited a few times and shot the .410 barrel when I really wanted to shot the .22. I think that from the start my strategy was to always cary it on .410 in case of a running or flying shot and switch to .22 for a shot at a still animal. After a while it wasn't a problem. I also have carried variable scopes on their lowest power and only cranked them up when needed (with a couple exceptions). Do hunters using drillings have problems shooting the wrong barrel?

i don't know if double rifle users shoot the wrong barrel or not. We're talking a double rifle in two different rifle calibers and it seems like you could easily try to put the wrong ammo in the right barrel, especially under pressure like when you need a quick reload.

I have insert barrels for all my drillings,  Some in 22 hornet/K-hornet that essentially do the same (as a DR).  Sometimes I use a rimfire insert, a hornet insert along wth the regular 7x57 8 or 9.3mm rifl barrels it makes a 3 barrel rifle in different calibers.  The good thing is you ca regulate the inserts for any range to be on with the scope or sights.  I usually do the rimfres @ 25 yds & the hornet @ 50 with the rfle zerod for 100..  Makes an interesting hunting gun.  Great for Florida where we encounter many different game animals/birds in a days hunt.

I am sure that a quick internet search would come up with the German nomenclature.  There is a version of this that seems moderately popular from that corner of the world.  Last one I remember reading about was a combo in 7x57r and .222 rem.
Same general idea: not undergunned for stag and not overgunned for smaller stuff.

Cheers,
Tom

bockbuchse would be the german word for an over/under double rifle
doppelbuchse would be side by side rifle
yes, you can get them in different calibers.
bockbuchsflinte is a double gun with vertical barrels in rifle and shotgun
buchsflinte is side by side rifle and shotgun

Of course you can get a drilling or a bockdrilling, which would be a drilling but turned on its side with the main tubes stacked and a third tube on the side instead of over or under.

You can get the drilling with the main tubes over the third tube or with the main tubes under the third tube.

Of course then you can get the vierling which has four barrels.  Normally with two shotgun tubes side by side and a rifle tube on both top and bottom.
