I disagree.  Neither of those kills were what I call "clean kills".   I don't allow wounded animals to flop around like that.  I don't shoot large game with .22s and always shoot something that takes them off their feet and kills them dead.....or I don't shoot.  At 75 yards, a head shot with a larger bullet would have been the end to it.  I don't think there's congratulations to be shared.  I think this boy needs to go home and do his homework.  I don't allow hunters who hunt that way on my property.

Use a gun more than adequate for the job, and put the bullet where it needs to go.

You obviously have not a clue.  How many animals you kill this year ?
Me about 30.
Brain shots usually always end in them flopping around like that, its the nerves, dont believe me, go to a slaughter house and tell me what you find.
heres one shot at 60 yds with a 7-08, this one flopped longer
yep hes wounded badly I'd say,

heres one to the noggin with the same 7-08.
If you want the whole video ill send it to you , few minutes are cut out of this one, he flopped longer as well.

you can keep whoever you want off your ranch as I will too, I dont allow idiots at mine.

Nothing wrong with those shots on hogs Mario.

I've shot more hogs than I can count and they all do the dance.

The last one I shot was with my 20 gauge using 3" Remington Buckhammers and it flopped for what seemed forever and when I approached it their was brain matter scattered for several feet behind where it was standing.

I gave the hog to a neighbor and he asked me what I shot the hog with?    I asked why?... and he said the head wasn't attached to the body but only by the outer skin.

And believe it or not, I used to work in a packing house for 15 years of my life!   Not a small operation either as we averaged anywhere from 1100 to 1500 hogs a day!

Pete,
That's a brain shot animal. He doesn't know a thing, merely "electrical" impulses still going to the muscles. Those critters are all done, feeling nothing, Brain disconnected.  I'm sure you have made head shots on small game like squirrels and rabbits haven't you?  Same results.

I do not use head shots for big game, but I do for vermin. For many folks dealing with these hogs on a daily basis, they are vermin!! I shoot all squirrels and rabbits in the head. Results are clean miss or meat in the pot. A wounded animal can usually be dispatched with a second shot if needed. Usually its not.  ;D

Here is a head shot pig. A 300 gr 45 cal soft point slug at 1300 fps, kinda changes his mind a bit.  ::) I do not know why the sound is out of phase to the image...

You reminded me CW about when I rabbit hunted when I was a kid just about any time I could get out in the woods with my .22 and those times I would shoot a rabbit and have them do back flips and jump straight up in the air after a perfect head shot.

Or how many times I grabbed a rabbit only to have him flail his legs at me after I picked him up!   ;D

Pull the head off a dove and it will still flop around and the same with cutting the head off a chicken!

Oh yeah, I've had a lot of animals do the bang flop and not move, but those were the ones that I was always suspicious about and approached very carefully!

I've head shot deer, bear and hogs, but always 30 caliber or over.  They flop down, kick a bit, twitch and tremble for a second or two and it's over.  I shot an 8 -900 lb. boar for a local farmer with the .45.70 in the head, and he never twitched.  Nor did the 1200 lb. bull.

I'm sorry.....I just don't believe in shooting large game with .22s.

I think it might have something to do with what part of the brain is destroyed.  If you sever the brain stem, it is lights out I would think.  Now if you destroy the front part I could definitely see how they would go crazy for a while uncontrollably.  Either way they are dead, but to be honest, the second hog kill was a bit hard to watch.  Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable hunting hogs with a 22-250 let alone at 22 hornet.  From what I have read, they can be kind of mean, right?  (I live in IL and have never hunted hogs, just from a computer screen)

No apology necessary Brother, I for one agree with you on this account. As I have said many times here, sometimes with rebuttal. We "owe" more to the game we harvest. We must dispatch quickly and humanely.

Having said that, I feel these are very humane kills. A bigger caliber makes for more room for error. Through more power, should your POI not be perfect. My own video is a 45Colt at 1300fps and a 300gr bullet. Exit was half dollar from the back of the head. He flopped for a good 10-15 seconds. There was very little "brain" left in his skull. Everyone has herd, NO Brain, NO PAIN...

I have posted this pic a couple times. Its two boars I head shot with a 12 Remington 1oz slugger. BOTH died and flopped for a number of seconds identical to the first 22H shot piggie...

ehhhh, unless cornered or wounded they always run away.
I hunt at night for them with the hornet and a .22 lr pistol as back up.
I have had to walk past tons of them in senderos that are loaded with pigs during the night, takes a little more for them to run off, like constant yelling, get the frack outa here. LOL

but i bet you have no problems with hunters slinging sticks at large game .
Ive bowhunted some 20 years, and without a doubt im 10 times more lethal with my hornet than any bow hunter.
Ive  never had to track an animal stung by the hornet.

This topic has been beaten to death on other forums, and I'm sure on here also, or maybe not so much, but it's still all about "Shot placement" and if your bullet has enough energy to penetrate the skull with an earhole shot at practical distances, then it really doesn't matter the caliber.

I've shot hogs in a trap at close range with a .22 long rifle and dropped them without a problem as have many other experienced hog trappers and hunters.

CW said what I have been thinking since this "too little" arguement started. Bigger allows for more margin of error. Unless you are trying to break down a critter where it can't attack, with a broken sholder such as a bear etc, where you need a lot of power to do the job, a well placed shot is effective. If you err in your shot placement you could end up wishing the round had been bigger for your own sake.

My family hunted deer with 22WMRs until they were outlawed. Didn't lose game but we didn't take bad shots. I have seen a deer, with it's heart blown out with a hot 150 gr handload, run 150 yards more than once. Just spook them before you shoot and adreanalin will carry them a long way. ear

Just my opinion,I don't think big calibers can make up for poor shot placement.

You are spot on correct and THAT my friend is the OTHER SIDE of the same coin!!  LOL

Best advice, Always use enough gun and learn to shoot it accurately!! One could surmise that the berrer you shoot, the less caliber is acceptable. To a degree, I agree!

I didn't mean to start a peeing match.  Of course, we all agree that shot placement is the key to everything.  I passed on nice deer this year and last because I didn't like the shot available.  I got old and lazy and don't follow blood trails around the woods with a flashlight and then have to drag them out a half mile.

A guy, Selious (sp?) back in the 1800s shot a bunch of African Elephants with a .45 muzzle loader.  Recommended elephant rifle?  Don't think so.  Shot placement again.  You could probably kill an elephant with a shot through the eye or ear with a .22LR.....but I wouldn't want to be standing around as a spectator.

I've been hunting big game for 56 years, and I found I want big, heavy bullets with lots of penetration and uniform expansion.  I seldom use the bottle necked calibers listed below my signature for large game.  I just bought a .500 Handi to add to the group of straight walls.
