First boolits for my maxi
« on: February 05, 2011, 05:18:44 PM »
Couldn't help posting some of my first boolits for my Maxi.  180 grain Ranch Dog mold.  Looks like about 30% cull's, but overall I'm real pleased with my first try.

I've been looking at this mold and look forward to a range report on those boolits. My Ranchdog 265 gr. 44 is a good shooter.

Here is my Maxi with that bullet, I am quite sure it will get better when I get some time to work on it

And here is my 336 Marlin in .35 Remington ( Micro Groove) , the very first load I tried !

Best casting for me is a good hot day; I do it outdoors (keeps the melt at temp better), and I use mostly WWTs with a bit of tin added for castability. It all helps the mould to fill out and cuts the rejects. Remember, any more than 5% tin is a waste of tin andd it doesnt make a bullet harder, its the antimony that does that. I top up a melt when the pot gets about 1/3 down.
For really hard drop the bullets hot out of the mould onto a sponge floating on a bucket of water next to you, BUT dont get any water splash anywhere near the molten lead!!!(steam explosion).

Gcrank1 :  I take a 5 gallon bucket and fill with water, float a sponge and then wrap tightly an old piece of bedsheet (could use T shirt 2) that I slice a slit into so that the bullet hits the sponge but any splash is caught by the bed sheet. Just my .02 cents worth.  God Bless to all.
