.38 Special
« on: February 08, 2011, 10:39:47 AM »
I load .38 specials for myself and my friend. He has a Taurus and I have S&W. Some times his Taurus will misfire with these loads. You can see a dent in the primer after pulling the trigger. I take the same cartridge put them in my S&W and they fire. He says he has never had a factory round fail to fire! I am using CCI primers.
Anyone have an idea why some do not fire in the Taurus, but then fire in my S&W?

I would guess some of the primers are not seated fully. I would guess your S&W has enough hammer spring power to seat and fire the rounds his gun has a weak spring and only seats the primer a tad more with out fireing .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

If his will fire the round in question on a second or third strike that will tell you. If not maybe he has fireing pin troubles.

Nope. I have tried them two and three times in his gun the don't shoot. Put them in my S&W they go bang! But he says never failed to fire factory round.

You might check the flat spring screw in the grip (if it has one).  I had some misfires in my M66 SW and my buddy put them in his Tarus and they worked fine.  I tightened the screw on the front of the grip that holds the main spring and it cured the problem.

When I was shooting a S&W mod 14 competition and using CCI primers I would have the same problem. I was told to switch to winchester primers that are softer, I never had the problem again. Some say that remington primers are soft also.

Hard primers and a weak spring will get you every time!  Try winchester primers or federals if you can get them.
