22 LR in the AR platform
« on: February 04, 2011, 08:08:02 AM »
Just was wondering how the ARs in 22LR work. I was looking at one Think it was made by S&W. Looked real nicebut how about accuracy & reliability?

Anyone use one? Whats your experience with them?

I don't own one, but I've looked into them pretty good and most people seem to be very happy with their S&W's.  Not so much with the colt/umarex's.

Picked up a Colt M4 .22lr when they first came out.  At first it was a little balky with some ammo, seemed to have light firing pit strikes.  Even though feeding was not an issue, I tried adjusting the "adjustment screw" as outlined in the owners manual.  This seemed to work, and now it is 100% reliable with most any high speed ammo I feed it, and accurate to boot.  I have a Bushnell red dot sight mounted on the handle, and it makes for a great plinking gun for rapid fire drills on attacking clay pigeons and beer cans.  I have heard good things about the S&W and Ruger versions as well, though I picked the Colt as it most closely imitates the form and function of a real AR M4.

I don't know that I would buy a complete rifle (though the S&W's look pretty nice) but I would buy a conversion kit.  A guy at the range had a conversion kit in his SBR AR and let me fire a mag through it.  It was a hoot.  Great for training and plinking.

i love my smith ar22. Its accuarate and reliable. MY buddy has both the smith and the colt and likes his smith better. Last round bolt hold open and ease of field stripping the smith are the advantages over the colt. His colt is a good reliable shooter though.

The S&W M&P15/22 are HIGHLY rated. Higher still are the SIG522's. Both are dedicated, purpose-built .22 versions of bigger brothers. Not kit guns or shell-guns - real guns

Anyway, I have a .22 conversion kit that I can swap into my ARs; makes them more fun than my SIG522 uber-gun.
