+1 on GB, education, and TM7 raised some good points.

In our family, men (12th birthday) get a 357 handgun to commemorate the occasion. Its a rite of passage, in conjunction with a long weekend with Dad, a couple important discussions, and a strong reiteration of the handgun as a tool to be used by a man to provide for and protect his family. This after a few years of owning his own 22 rifle, and firing all the family guns. Presently my son keeps his rifle in his room, used to be up on the wall but we realized not all of his friends get it. All the ammo for it is stored in ammo cans, secured in our home armory, to which he has access 24/7. The only other loaded gun presently not in the armory is his Mom's HD revolver, which he know is his responsibility to ensure is employed in my absence (I'm military, I deploy). He's been through hunter safety, numerous handgun classes from me and from various shooting coaches and range safety officers, and shot competition handgun. My daughter (now at the CG Academy) has fired every thing in the arsenal, been through coaching, classes, and will receive a handgun upon receipt of her commission in a couple years. The success of gun safety is demythologizing the tools.

Back shortly after my wife and I got married, we had no kids to worry about.  I carried guns everyday at my job.  I carried a saddle carbine or rifle, a saddle holster gun a Ruger Blackhawk in .44 mag, and a .44 short barrelled Ruger Redhawk on my hip.  I rode horseback or in a Dune Buggy out into the New Mexico White Sands area, a vast dessert by my self daily.  With no kids, guns were always setting out on tables, up on top of cabinets, leaning in corners, or lying on the coffee table in a state of disassemble for cleaning or repair.  A few were on display stands on tables or shelves, and many hung on pegs from the wall.  We owned a Rotty and a Lab, so I was never concerned about someone coming into the house when we were not there.

My wife wanted to entertain the women she worked with one weekend, so she asked me to cleanup the guns, and put them all away, because there might be kids coming.  I did that, I put all the guns in the back bedroom and locked the door.  The party was a success and everyone was happy.

The following weekend one of the ladies dropped by unannounced.  She had a little boy about three that was totally out of control.  During the party the Brat had stayed home with Dad.  As she came up to the door she yelled Knock, knock, and walked right in uninvited.

When she entered I told her she needed to keep her kid undercontrol.  She was offended, she said, "He's used to being able to run around free and not being restricted".  The kid ran over and picked up a Black Powder pistol that I kept on a small stand beside the TV for Display.  I had no Black Powder and the nipples had been mushroomed by people picking it up and accidentally dry firing it so it would not shoot anyway, but she did not know that.  I pointed out, "That's a real gun your kid just picked up and is aiming at you, what are you going to do when it goes Bang"?  She looked at the rifle I was cleaning on the coffee table, then at her kid pointing a gun at her.   She grabbed both sides of her head and started screaming.  I reached over and pulled the gun out of the kids hands, and the kid immediately went to screaming.  I looked at her and said in a real calm voice, "You were not invited in so I am telling you to get out, now".  As she was running down the drive I yelled, "Don't ever come back uninvited".  She yelled, "I won't, and I'm calling the sheriff".

My neighbor was sitting on his front porch drinking a beer, he got up and came over asking what had just happened.  I told him and he said not to worry about it, he'd take care of her.  My neighbor was both the City and County Magistrate.  Never heard another word from it.  Of course my wife did, but she did not care anyway.  The women at work all agreed when the wife told her, "Too bad the Brat did not pull the trigger and shoot you, you don't come into someones home unannounced".  "Surprised the Old Man was not sitting there in his underwear".  The rest of the women laughed so hard she went home for the rest of the day.  She never spoke to my wife again.

Mohawk:  You betcha, she is a keeper.  She also shoots a pistol better than I do.

And she has saved my bacon more than once.  She fired 13 rounds from a semi auto at a charging Grizzly, while I was trying to get up and get a rifle that I had leaned against a tree several feet away.  When I skinned that Bear there was thirteen holes in it.

A safe is for guns that are not intended to be used. A HD weapon needs to be loaded and left out. Training is critical. If the kid picks up the gun, smack them. If they pick it up again, smack them harder.

If it is a problem for playdates, don't have playdates, go to the movies.

And if you wear glasses and need them for HD, sleep with them on.

Lock them up.

Very few times did my kids invite friends in. Usually they were way too busy having fun outside. When they did though they kept very close eyes on their friends. Also, I was blessed to own an extremely smart pure bred Chow. Never had to teach that dog a thing, he just knew! He too kept an eye on anyone who came into the house, my friends included. Get too close to my gun cabinets and he'd get between you and them and growl letting you know they were off limits. He was a big baby with family, and those I told him were ok, but do something wrong and he turned from puppy dog to Freddy Kruger on steroids!  ;D People got the point and were wise enough not to argue with him!

My three boys were raised with guns to included loaded ones all over the house and in plain sight of them. They were talked from the earliest of days they do not touch the guns unless they ask permission first and I'm there to supervise.

When a new gun came home if they wanted I'd show them how to check to be sure it wasn't loaded them hand it to them to handle and get the newness of it out of their system. Ya just gotta teach them from the time they are babies to respect the firearms and not to mess with them. Make them a big secret and you assure they will try to get to them and handle them behind your back.
Same here . You do need to make obeying parents a big thing not a liberal lifestyle . I have three . I also had a blank gun for dog training . I would always do as GB pointed out but at times would leave that blank gun out in a tempting place. My oldest told his mom that if he had friends over the gun should be put away. The middle one told me I forgot my gun and the youngest got on me pretty hard for leaving it out.
I did not read all post but if you lock up all your weapons how will your family defend themselves when you are not home ? I ask because my son at 12 years old had to do so twice . Both times the sight of a kid with a 12 pump shotgun changed the minds of adults . 2 were on the front porch breaking in the front door . A few weeks later an adult kicked in the back door and came in but retreated at the sight of the gun. What would you do if your child called you and said someone was breaking in the frond door ? And no the cops would not get there in time to do much more than fill out a report no fault of theirs . BTW he had killed several deer by this age with a Pump shotgun . I believe he was 8 when he got his first deer an eight pointer.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
