Starting broccolli from seed

I have grown some broccolli from just buying plants, but this year I am going to start some (or try to) from seed.  Looks like it takes 10-21 days to germinate so I am starting now (in the house) figuring a typical planting date of Memorial weekend, although since broccolli is a more cool weather plant maybe I can get it in the ground a couple weeks earlier ie. mid May.

Any thoughts from you green thumbed gardeners?

Sounds like a good plan to me.  It doesn't grow too well around here and it doesn't can well so I don't plant it though.

It's time to put plants in the garden where I live.  Could be too late for seed.  Broccoli will bolt if they mature in warm weather.

Just noticed your location.  You should have more time.  You're probably covered with snow right now.

The last time I started broccoli from seed was when I lived in Southern Illinois about 25 years ago.  That was probably a zone 5 and as I remembered it I started the seeds in mid January.  If it is too late to start them now where you live you can always start the seeds in mid summer to put them out for a fall crop.

They are about 2" tall now....just started the seed 5 days ago.  We still have snow cover and frozen ground.  I am hoping to plant them by mid May, although Memorial weekend is our typical planting period for all veggies.

I'm thinking I started too early, but I just had to plant something......winter blues ya know
