I was cleaning my shed the other day and came across a nearly empty shim pack. The kind that has the square, slotted shims for pump/motor alignments. So I got to thinking to myself that I could put a handi together that I could take down with no tools that would pack into this box. The internal dimensions are 16.5"long X 3"wide X 4"deep. Then I thought I could combine this with my other idea, the subsonic .30-30, or .30 PMW (poor mans whisper) as another member dubbed it. Ive got a good start on it already. I took a survivor stock and cut the buttstock portion off right at the pistolgrip. Then I recessed the backside of the hole with a 1" drill bit. The stock is a piece of 1"od X .035 wall stainless instrument tubing. I welded the 3/8-24 cap screw in the end and built the end up with weld then ground it round to roughly match the shape that the drill but cut out of the pistol grip. So if you can picture this, the tubing sticks up into the pistolgrip with the threaded stud sticking out the front. This then, of course, screws into the receiver. I havent quite figured out what Im gonna do for a butt plate, but Im working on it. I ordered a set of the extended weaver quad locks, an evolution gun works picatinny base, and a 4x20 burris timberline. The burris has 5 inches of eye relief so my thinking is with the long base and extended rings, I can come up with a semi-scout setup that will put the ocular lens just ahead of the hammer. I think I will probably use a standard synthetic forend with the thumbscrew from the survivor set. Weight will be in the 3.5-4 lb range with optic. Anybody else here ever try to put together a handi like this? Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated as this is a work in progress. Thanks--jason
