Are we comparing the .460S&W versus 45-70 in level 1, 2, or 3 loadings?   ...Because the .460 cant come close to what the level 2 and 3 can do.

The 45-70 will push a 300gr bullet as fast as the 460S&W will a 250gr bullet. FWIW, my 460 H&R pushes the 200gr Hornady factory ammo almost 2900fps, but the short fat bullet looses velocity real fast, its .145 BC isn't much better than a round ball!  ;D It will push the 250gr SST/FTX (BC .210) about 2500fps or so. The Barnes 300gr TSX-FB will do 2550fps in a 45-70 and has a BC of .230.

I guess I was hoping there might be less difference between the two. I almost added a 45/70 barrel to my barrel order last week but my budget and practicality got in the way and I didn't do it. If the current proposed Indiana deer hunting regulations are passed the 460 will be a legal deer caliber next year.  I doubt I'll ever run into a critter around here that the 460 wouldn't handle and since I now have an extra 45 Colt barrel I guess the 460 wins. Still the old 45/70 still has the cool factor, it might be worth saving up for one.

I've said it before..... If'n I lived in Indiana and they passed the 1.8" min rule, I'd get hold of a 35 Rem Handi or rechamber an SB2 357Mag or even a Maxi(in fact I did just that!  8)) and trim the brass to 1.8", seat the bullet long and load to Super 35 Rem velocities, 2450fps with the 180gr SSP is easy to do in the 22" barrel. The 200gr FTX would be even better at ~2400fps.

Tim, your plan makes the most sence and I've copied the load data, but I just bought another CR 45 and right now I'm trying to make the most use of it. I'll agree, casca1, Indiana could be better but I'm not swimmin' the Wabash anytime soon!

I just hope the Indiana disease doesn't spread this far north.  We've got enough regulations now.

Yeah, the 45-70 will do everything the 460 will, AND MORE, but, given your locational limitations I'll wager you will get a lot of satisfaction with the 'lite' version  ;).
And YES, save up for a 45-70 (isnt it a requirement now on GBO?).

The fact that I can ream the 45 out to 460 makes it a no brainer but you guys have talked up the 45/70 so much I might have to get me one sooner or later. That 18 3/4" barrel that just came out on the accessary list sure would make a handy Handy. Petemi, I've got kin up around the Detroit area and after hearin' some of my uncle's deer huntin' tales there's no way this ol' Hoosier's comin' up there! LOL

I find my 460 about 200 fps slower than the 45-70, but I also have only gone up to bullet weight of about 325gr.  Of course, at 2100fps, its nothing to sneeze at.
