Value of Safari Bolt action 7mm Rem.
« on: December 24, 2010, 10:03:44 AM »
Found a Browning Safari bolt action 7mm Rem.for sale. The owner said it was from 1969 and it has a Sako looking action (no claw extractor). He said he bought it new and has only shot 1 box of shells through it and never shot it again, this gun is in great shape, 98% plus. Seems to be the standard grade, nothing real fancy. Any idea what it is worth? and what kind of accuracy can you expect ?  Thanks for any help and Merry Christmas!!

For starters, if it's a 7mm Rem mag, it's a standard-length action vs a short or medium length - which were the only two length Sako action that Browning restocked as Safari's etc.

So, it's most likely a short extractor FN Mauser action.

1969 is also near the end of the infamous Browning "saltwood" era - where Browning used wood that was speedily salt cured - fast, but rusted the gun metal below the stock lines.
A peek at one of the buttplate or recoil pad, to inspect for rust, will usually tell the tale for that particular gun - although the screws "could" have been switched out recently.

Saltwood values run about 50% less then a non-saltwood gun in the same grade/condition.

The book value for a 98%, non-saltwood, 7mm Mag Safari is $850, +/-.

I ended up buying the gun. I removed the Barrel/action from the stock to check for rust, luckily there is no rust on any of the metal. Once we get some decent weather I am going to hit the range and see what kind of accuracy I can get. Thanks for the reply!!
