Loads for the 300 Win Mag
« on: February 11, 2011, 01:06:13 PM »
About to start reloading for this caliber and wanted to ask other 300 WM owners if they had an accurate load for a 165-168 gr bullet. I don't need the full power loads but something in the 2500-2700 fps range. I saw a load in a Hornady reloading manual for IMR 4064, I think it was 52.2 grains for 2700 fps but this load isn't listed on the Hodgdon website. If I ever take that dream trip out to where the Elk are I'll load up some full power stuff but for now I'm needing 200-300 yard whitetail stuff.

I know this isnt the answer you want but i dont download mag rifle rounds. I fooled a little bit with it and never got guilt edged accuracy and allways thought that if i wanted 308 or o6 ballistics id grab a 308 or o6 out of the safe. I will say that both of my 300 win mags like nos 165 ballistic tips and max loads of re19. I made two shots over 400 yards on whitetail this year with that load.

;) I agree with Lloyd..If I want light loads I use my .300 Sav. or o6...For the .300 I like IMR4350 or Re22..I am using the latter in my old one with 165's.  I got more pressure with I4350 in this barrel so switched to the slower powder...Re19 would be fine also, but never tried it..

When downloading this round be extremely careful. The results of getting too light on the powder hurts! Been there, done that using minimums as per a Hornady manual. High pressure, getting the crap kicked out ya and having to beat the bolt open on a rifle ain't fun.

I reload for the 300WM and I love a 150 grain Nosler Accubond over 72 grains of IMR 4350 in a Winchester case with a Winchester WLRM primer.  I get 3100 FPS from this load.  I shot a cow elk in 2006 at a tad under 300 yards and a 7 point whitetail at about 80 yards in 2010 and the bullets performed flawlessly.  I wouldn't hesitate to use this load on anything at just about any range.

72 grs of IMR 4350 with about any 165/68 gr bullet is usually a very accurate load. It will run around 3100 fps. Most mag rifles shoot their best close to or at max loads. I will agree with tony212 about the Nosler Accubond bullets. They hold together at close range with high speed as well as open up well hold together and keep on truck at long ranges. I have been shooting the 130 gr AB in my 264 Win mag the past two season and have killed 5 deer from 80 to 250 yards with them and they have worked flawless. All deer were DRT. I have had experience with the 300 Win mag a number of years ago and found that the average cup and core 150 gr bullets really come apart too much inside 150 yards at the 3200 to 3400 fps that usually is the most accurate load for them. I stepped up to the 165 gr bullets for deer and they did much better. The new bonded bullets will do you best.
