What's everybody's preferred bullet for loading over black powder in the 45 Colt, for use in rifles and revolvers?
Nobade, there are two.
1. Many BP folks are devout users of the PRS bullet with the big lube grooves. I shot thousands of them for CAS. But past 100yds the bullet dies in the accuracy area because of the large metplat. Springfield Slim on CasCity sells the bullets and Dick Dastardly sells the mould
2. So, I switched over to the Lyman 454190 bullet. Why? Because I shoot further than 100 yds but still wanted a bullet that would carry sufficient lube so the revolvers did not bind shooting CAS. The Lyman mold has radial cut grease groove bands and the ogive is a tad different than the original 454190. There was a Group Buy on Cast Bullets for the original design with a 6 cavity mould. Bought one and could not be happier with the performance of the bullet for it's lube carrying capacity and accuracy past 100 yds to 200yds.
Because the 454190 weights 255-260grs, shooting 300yds ... it is too light. For 300yd lever matches, use the 454, 300gr Casull bullet
Here's what the Casull with 40gr FFg will do @ 500 meters in a '60 Henry ...
A '60 Henry with stock rear ladder sight, a good spotter = 2 Rams down in a row. Also managed to drop the complete bank of Rams but not with successive shots
