Too Cold to go hunting, I'll watch the race instead.
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:33:21 AM »
Was planning on going up the Steese highway this morning to do some wolf hunting.  Got up at 6am this morning and went out to get the paper.  By the time I got to the end of the drive, (50 yards) my body was beginning to hurt from the cold.  Half way back to the door I decided I needed to hurry, my feet were beginning to burn in side my sneakers.  I looked at the temp after getting back inside.  45 below, darn.  Looked at the forcast in the paper, decided to put the trip off for a few days.  By Thursday it is forcast to be above zero during the day, I'll go then.  I'm retired, timing is not chiseled in stone for me.  I went back to bed.

Plus I drive a Diesel, that sucker don't like cold weather, anything below minus 20.  At minus 40 it takes four hours to heat all that oil and cast iron to the point it will start.  I plugged it in at 10, so it will be 2 before it will be warm enough to start, so I can go to the gym.

The paper (Fairbanks Daily News Miner) (  http://www.newsminer.com/  )  published pictures of the dog mushers running the Yukon Quest.  They are out in temps down to 50 below, running that race.  The leaders have already left Circle.  Now comes the hard part of the trip.  Up to this they have been running on the Yukon River.  At Circle they leave the river and head up into the mountains.  I think the leaders will arrive in Fairbanks tomorrow.   The Iditarod gets all the press, but the Quest is the tougher of the two races.

How does anyone survive in -45 weather? :o  A couple weeks ago we had three days of -10. I didn't even bother to go out on those days.

And aren't we all thankful for the global warming of algore? Just think how cold it would be without it?
I was at my camp in Maine a couple of weeks ago, too much snow to drive in so we got in as far as we could and then snowshoed the rest of the way. Left on a Sunday morning and it was -10. Stopped at my buddy the game wardens house on the way out, he was sweating and shoveling off his roof (again). He said we were lucky we were leaving then before it got cold starting the next day. But they were only looking at -14 to -20. I have been coyote hunting along the Golden Road on Maine in -27 and it was not to bad, it was the wind that really got to you. I have to admit, zero or a bit warmer is much nicer....<><.... ;)

I was just going out to get the paper.  I wear New Balance walking shoes (sneakers), the ones with Velcro.  I wear them all the time unless I am planning on being outside for a while.  Then I will slip on my Bunny Boots.  Bunny boots are good down to 65 below.  Most people in the Interior wear Bunny Boots anytime they are going to be outside for long.  But some wear them exclusively during the winter.

Glad I have heated seats in my truck.  It was 42 below again this morning.  the old Beagle refuses to go outside, we have to pick him up and carry him out the door.  If we don't watch him he will go hide behind a snow machine or 4-wheeler in the back yard and not do his business, then come running back to come inside.  If we let him get away with it we will find a surprise later somewhere in the house.  When I leave he is now stuck in the garage while I am gone.
