Bullet Weight vs. Barell Twist
« on: February 03, 2011, 07:49:20 AM »
Hi everybody, I was just wondering what would be lightest bullet i could use in an AR with a twist rate of 1:9  I have allot of ammo in the 40 gr. category but I read that if the twist rate was too fast the centrifugal force would disintegrate the bullet in its trajectory????? Thanks!
Please email if possible. Thanks again!

My Bushmaster with a 1in9 barrel shoots the winchester 45gr white box real well. Thats the lightest I've tried.  :D

1:9 will generally shoot the 40gr bullets well.  With a .223 I've never had a problem disintigrating anything due to the lack of velocity that the cartridge generates.

1:9 is probably the best compromise twist rate to handle the 40 to 65 gr. bullets.  Faster, like 1:7 or 1:7.5 handles the heavier - 70 to 105 gr projectiles better than the lighter.  Slower, like the 1:11 or 1:12 handles the lighter bullets well but not the heavier.

hi i use 62 grain in my  ar15 it shoots clover leafs at 100 yards with 55 grain the group opens up to 1 inch these guns are  incredible i thought being 62  that i was really loosing it. this is bench rest of course.i found out you don't have to have a match trigger just the right bullet. i have  reloaded some  and shot  wolf  with  good results.
