Bout to open up a can o' .44 mag worms.
« on: February 11, 2011, 09:30:52 PM »
So I've been looking around because I need another DA .44 mag - and looking through the prejudices in my brain trying to be open to many ideas while I look, you know, round out the collection a little more.

I've got a few stipulations.

One, not cost a ton and be all pretty, cause I'm gonna be knockin the piss out of it, shooting lots through it, and general not put it in anything that protects it besides a holster.  I really don't need a 1,000 revolver.  Five or Six hundred bucks pretty standard.

Two, strong.  Once again with the knock the piss out of.  I'm not known to be very nice to my arms when I load...  My other DA .44 has seen 30 grains of H110..... I won't elaborate on any details.  The gun handled it fine, my wrists another story.  ;)

Three, heavy.  Handle big loads without too much snap.

Four, strong.

So I guess the converstaion comes down to, what DA .44's are built to knock the piss out of nowadays?

On the list with these stipulations so far, there is:

Anything made by ruger, I could probably drill out a single six and shoot .44 mag with it.  ;)
Taurus Raging Bull
Dan Wesson

What about the 629 smiths?  I know the 29 smiths would blow up, are the 629's recoil junkie worthy?

Anything else I'm overlooking?

Since you want a double action, you need a Ruger Super Redhawk or Redhawk. Forget about the alternatives.

Why would a 29 be more prone to "blow up" as compared to a 629? I have a 29 in 5" and have been shooting it for 20 years, no blow ups.

I have also been shooting a 29 for years, a 29-2.  But I don't shoot hot with it.  It just isn't designed for it.  That is why I'm wondering if the metallurgy is different with the 629's to bring them up closer to ruger levels?

??? corbonzo, I have a 29-2..When you say you do not shoot it hot??? What do you mean..?? I am not jerking your chain, I just want to know what you mean by hot..I seldom load my .44 mags. "hot"..I like pistols, but I am a rifleman first.. My pistol friends have told me to shoot heavy .44 bullets one needs a Redhawk or S. Blackhawk.. Do you consider Elmers load of 22 grains of 2400 and a 250 grain bullet hot????? I seldom shoot that load in my SW, but have a few for bear protection when fishing up north..Thanks for the info.. ;)

Buy a SRH and quit yer fussin'! ;D  A 629 might not blow up but you'll probably shorten it's life dramatically with super heavy loads.

As in my bear protection load is 20grains of h110 under a 320 grain wfngc hot, and I have ventured beyond that for (censored word) and giggles.   - I buy those bullets in boxes of 100.  And they get shot.  Not out of the smith though.

I guess its just the alaskan in me but I kind of consider anything under 250 grains in a .44/.45 to be a plinker load.  Those bullets are loaded for speed.  I stay with 300's/320's for thump.

And yeah, I got a line on a good deal ruger SRH so I might just make everybody happy (with pictures of course) ;)

Super Redhawk will do anything you need it to. Built like a tank. The factory triggers will be better on the Smith's though.

Having owned at least one of all of those mentioned I'd get a 629S&W.

anything but a Taurus....

I've got a titanium cylinder raging bull frame .44 mag taurus that I have run stuff so hot through it would melt a S&W.

Do you consistantly overload your 629?  That is my question.... will it take abuse?

I haven't seen a Taurus that didn't have to go back for repair.  They are good about fixing them and returning them promptly.  I can't get past the bulk & weight.  Ok at the range but not in the woods.
