25-06 Ultra Accuracy

I have a 25-06 Ultra that i got in 2008. I have tried several different load combinations from factory loads to hand loads. Bullet weights that i have tried include. 75 gr sierra, 85 gr nosler ballistic tip, 100gr remington core-loct (Factory Load), 117 gr sierra, 117 gr hornady sst. I have tried different powder and primer combinations also. I have tried alot of the things in the faq such as free floated the barrel, reduced trigger pull to about 1.5- 2 lbs., filed the latch shelf so that it would lock up good and square, and also polished the bore, changed scopes, changed rings, and also made sure the scope base was on securely. From day one i have got no better than about 4-5 inch groups at 50 yards. I probably should have sent it back to H&R when i first got it, but had hopes that i could tinker with it and make it shoot better. My question is reckon H&R would make it right if i sent it in to them even though the warranty is long gone?? and i could possibly get an accessory barrel while it was there. I also have a Handi in 204 ruger with the bull barrel and it will about put the bullet through the same hole at 50 yards. Can't understand why the 25-06 won't shoot.

Welcome! One thing you didn't mention is the tips in the Handi Basics sticky, oil on the latch shelf, position of the front rest and not pulling the trigger to the rear each time can make a big difference in how they shoot, some rifles more flexible in rest position and trigger pull, so one may shoot well when the next won't. But it certainly wouldn't hurt to contact H&R and make arrangements for them to check it out, when you call ask them to send a shipping label to cover the cost. Be aware they'll restore the trigger to ~3½lbs when they work on it tho, in fact that light of trigger may be the problem, it can cause inconsistent pin strikes, even misfires due to the transfer bar not being in proper position to work properly. There are other issues that could cause it to not shoot well, bad crown or poorly fitted barrel would be at the top of the list, it should shoot factory ammo into less than 2" at 100yds, the H&R 25-06 is normally very accurate with 115gr-120gr factory ammo, mine is, so accurate that I don't even bother handloading for it!!

Thanks for the info Quikdtoo, I got some 120 gr bullets loaded last night going to try them before calling H&R. I made sure that the latch shelf has been dry before each shot. I am using a washer to free float the barrel. I have been using a bipod to shoot off of and also shot with sandbags in front of the trigger guard without the bipod, still same results. When i first got the 25-06 and it shot horrible groups i looked down the barrel after cleaning it and it looked to have chatter marks in it between the rifling. That was the reason for me polishing the bore. It doesn't have them now since the polish unless it is far enough down the barrel were i can't see.

Well worked up some different loads a couple of days ago. Consisting of 4 85 grain noslers. and 2 sets of 115 grain bullets. The groups were anywhere from 3- 4 inches at 50 yards for all three and stringing them all over the place. So i got on the phone with H&R and they are sending me a return shipping label to ship this thing back to them to be worked on. I asked about the 7mm-08 accessory barrel and the lady told me that they were in stock. I also ask about the 243 bull fluted 24" and she said they did not have any of those in stock right now. I will try to keep you all posted on what happens.

If you want the 243 barrel, order it when you send the rifle in, they may very well have it in stock when they get to it.

I have a rem. 700 in 25-06 since 1971  and a handi since 1998  and have used nothing but win.
120 gr.  positive expanding point.  1/2 to 3/4 inch at 100yds. all day long.  Its the gun and shells
not me.  Best shells I have ever shot. Give them a try.
