Hello, everyone. There is a 300yd. prone match about 100mi. from me held in Sept. Open to any rifle with cast bullets. I was thinking of getting back into black powder & thought a .40-70 STR. would be just the thing. In your opinion, does bullet shape..nose profile have much effect at this relative short range. I know the old schuetzen shooters used mostly flat nosed bullets at 200yd. and 300 isn't terribly farther. I have a distinct dislike for recoil..and this is a regulation Creedmoor weight 10 pounder with smooth steel shotgun buttplate. I have a Leeth nose pour copy of the old Ideal 405 bullet...#412263 @ 300gr. This is very accurate & light recoil. I also have the RCBS 350gr., NEI Postell @ 385gr., and Nei copy of .45 Gov.
@390gr. i have never shot any of these with black. The Postell looks to be the most streamlined. Thanks!
