45-70 brass... Win cases weight lighter than Rem
« on: February 17, 2011, 04:03:02 AM »
Went to load some 45-70.  Set out 15 primed cases to load but the final count when done was 16.  Suspected that I might have accidentally seated one case that had been primed but not charged.  So Einstein here decides to weigh the loaded rounds, to see if any one was light by the 48.4 grains installed in the others.  To my surprise, two rounds were about 35 grains light.  What tha?  So I pulled the bullet, weighed correctly, dumped the charge, weighed correctly, leaving only the case as the problem.  Then I noticed these two were the only WIN cases in the lot of REMs.  The both primed WIN cases were 30-35 grains lighter than the other primed, empty REM cases there.

So...  are these WIN cases maybe not as well made with less brass material?

Winchester cases are always lighter because they are thinner.  That means there is more room in a Winchester case.

When I try for high velocity, I use Winchester for the reason listed. For lower powered loads like 30-30,32 spec, 45-70,which are thicker I use the Rems. This works well with 5744 powder and cast boolit loads.

I prefer Remington brass when I can get it.  I believe it last longer.

I like Starline brass for the 45-70s. I don't need to load heavy as I shoot steel
reactive targets and an occasional jug full of water.

SO then, do we expect the thinner cases to not last as long when treated equally along side the Rem cases?

I do not expect the Winchester cases to last as long.

Actually in my 40 years plus of reloading, thin brass last longer, especially with higher end loads. Thicker brass brass tends to "work harden" faster. I like Norma,Lapua and RWS cases best, best I'm just a poor working lad. I favor Remington rimmed cases for lower power loads due to less volume area. Besides at low pressures that these rounds work, work hardening rarely comes into play. I'm not a meturlurgical engineer, but I did stay at the Holiday Inn last night. ;)

I have had WW cases last longer than Rem in my 45-70. I use WW because I load with black powder and you can get more of it into a WW case than you can a Rem case. "Smokeless power is just a passing fad."  ;D

I've lost dozens of thin cases to splitting.

I ordered 100 new REM cases.  I figure stronger is better, but I DID NOT stay at Holiday Inn last night.

The modest loads I have been using in 45-70 are not requiring cases to be trimmed and I size as little as possible and stopped crimping for my single shot.  Even with this little of working the metal, I don't see how thinner is better.
