gallon milk jugs full of water
« on: February 16, 2011, 11:00:54 AM »
i   know they are not a realistic way to tell how a bullet will perform

but  i just love shooting  them

are there  others that  enjoy  this ''sport''  as much as  i do??

some times i just want to vaporize  ONE
other times  i see how many i can  penetrate.....they have to track  strait

i got started doing this  as  a teen,,,,...with  a 35 rem.....it  did good
the  30-06  accelerator was the best.. with a hand wittle  hallow point........[excluding the 50 bmg]
bullet didn't even hit the plywood behind it.........just lead dust on the ground around it

any one have any videos.......thousands others on you-tube...i want to see  your video

i have yet to splash one with the new  375 ruger!!!

Killed my share of jugs, some just plain water and some with color added for show, but the last couple years it has gotten so cold during the winters I had to come up with a new sport.  When the temps run between 0 or a bit below and barely make double digits during the day i fill up 5 gal. buckets with water and just let them set for about 3 days.  After about 3 days they are solid and most will pop out of the buckets with little trouble.  They make some very explosive long range targets with the right gun.

Yes this a a vice of mine. I love to watch them blow up.

A 376 steyr does a pretty good job on them also.

If you think that is fun try a pill bottle about half full of real black powder.  With a .223 it makes a wonderful little mushroom cloud. :o

Testing cast handgun loads I'd fill gal jugs with clay dirt packed, but not tight. A charcoal briquette is fun to shoot too. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Beyond 500 yards, gallon jugs of colored water is all we like to shoot.  We add food coloring to hel-p us see when we have a hit.  A milk jug is about the size of the kill zone on a Moose (actually it is smaller).  They make good targets for practice.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I froze some gallon jugs with water in them, then shot them
with some BB loads from my Guide gun. Talk about a shattering
experience. It was a bit of a mess to clean up. Freezing water
in a bucket makes more sense, I'll try that next time, thanks
for the tip!

Funny thing about shooting into ice is results aren't always what you would expect.  I've used many different calibers and bullets and some just bore a hole while others get explosive.  Some of the military bullets give the best results, believe it or not!   ???  Nothing has topped the 300 grain home cast from my 444 at 2136 fps.  Some of the small bore SX and BTs just leave surface wounds with no penetration at all.  But then again so do some of the so called premium hunting bullets.   ::)  If I were a sniper that had to shoot through heavy glass to get to a target I would give this a lot of thought and practice.   ;)

Take a coffee can and partly fill it with gasoline; light it off, get back a good distance and hit it with something big.  Just don't do this near anything that is combustible.

Back in my high school days I would play around with my father's 45-70 trapdoor when I could afford a box of cartridges (which was rare). Using the 405 grain Remington softpoints I tried a penetration test. Using materials at hand I started with a 2x4 followed by 12 inch pine boards, followed by a gallon tin can filled with a combination of burlap and sand packed down as tight as I could, followed by another 2x4 and then a 4x4 wood block. Dug the slug out of the 4x4 with about 2" of penetration after going through all the other stuff I listed. That impressed the hell out o me concerning the 45-70s penetration!

No, I haven't loaded the 376 with slugs for the 38-55. I have considered it alot. A gas check and a reasonably hard alloy should do the trick. Those 375 jacketed bullets are expensive. I know I wont be hunting anything larger than an elk, but there is something about a large bore that is fun to shoot.

When ever one of my kids had friends visit, or any kids visiting at all family included, I'd take them out in the back yard and let them shoot a few jugs filled with water. The looks on their faces when they see that first jug exsplode was priceless. Besides their having fun I used it as a lesson in teaching them the power of a bullet and it quickly instilled in them the understanding of why they were never to touch any firearm without adult supervision. It got the point accross much better than mere words. :)

And I thought I was the only jug shooter!  I use all different size containers filled with water. Frozen water is cool too.  michstew
